Creative People Collect Stuff to Create...
Are You Creating Clutter?
Most creative people collect 'stuff' to create with. It could be yarn,
fabric, paper, paint, wood, metal scraps, or any number of other items. You
never know what you might need when the next inspiration strikes. The tricky
part is keeping everything at a reasonable volume and organized. Otherwise you
can't find what you know you have, and then you buy something only to discover
later that you already own that item. Wasted money and added clutter.
I love to scrapbook and make cards. Thus, I know first-hand how craft clutter
can multiply. For those who craft, shopping for craft supplies can feel like a
kid does when walking into a candy shop. Everything is enticing, and you want it
all.
One thing that works for me is to challenge myself to use up what I already
have...before purchasing more...no matter how tempting it could be. In doing so,
it actually sparks more creativity. Why? Because I'm forcing myself to look at
what I already own in a new way, rather than taking the lazy route and just
buying more.
Could you use yarn instead of twine? What about piecing fabric scraps together
for a patchwork project? You could create new paint colors by mixing what you
have.
Start the next month with the intent to not spend any money on new crafting
materials and supplies. Put a star on your calendar each day you are successful
at not spending. Don't reward yourself at the end of the month with a shopping
spree. This defeats the whole purpose of this recommendation. Instead, take your
spouse out to dinner, pay off a bill or two, or put what you saved (estimate
based on past purchases) in a mason jar and start saving for a weekend trip.
The satisfaction of whatever you choose may prompt you to continue your 'no
spend' into the next month. I know it does for me. I love this concept so much
that my supplies are down to 'bare bones' before I spend a penny on more.
Something else I do with supplies I already have is put together 'project kits.'
Gather up all the materials you need for a specific project and put them into a
tote, basket, box, etc. How many kits can you create? You may be surprised to
find that you have plenty of projects to keep you busy without grabbing your
wallet. You may find long-lost material in the process...or even a half done
project waiting for you to finish.
While collecting some extra craft supplies now and then can be fun, a little too
much fun can result in hoarding if you're not careful. Use that fun stuff to
make something great before buying anything else. Maybe you'll create a family
heirloom. Look at the treasure trove of goods you already have for your next
creation. You may surprise yourself.
Of course, you can carry over this thinking into other rooms of your home and
areas of your life, as well. How often will you really use that fancy stand
mixer? Most home bakers can suffice with a hand mixer. That blue shirt is
beautiful, but so are the other four that are already in your closet. How many
pairs of black shoes does one person really need? Be more discriminate in your
craft supply purchases and more creative in how you use what you already have.
Your house will be less cluttered, your bank account will be fatter, and you can
show off what you made knowing that you made good, and creative, use of your
craft stash.

Clutter-Busting Resource Available
For super quick details on how you can say goodbye to clutter, visit:

All people have clutter to some degree.
You may have a little bit of clutter sitting around--things that aren't really
serving any purpose, taking up unnecessary space, gathering dust, and causing a
bit of frustration.
Or perhaps you have LOADS of clutter and it's causing your life to be turned
upside down--you can't find things easily, you feel like your home is bursting
at the seams with STUFF, you have to climb over piles and boxes to get to
anything, and you feel overwhelmed and frustrated.
MOST people are somewhere right in the middle of these two situations.
For anyone who just has a little bit of clutter, have no doubt in your mind that
CLUTTER GROWS, and small challenges soon turn into large issues.
BUT, here's something NEW I discovered...
Clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may have in
your closet, the overload of toys in the toy room, the boxes of stuff in the
basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home.
Clutter actually invades your life in FOUR forms...
1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
3. Digital Clutter
4. Emotional Clutter
And once it's there, it begins to wreak all sorts of havoc...

Week Beginning September 23
1. Delay grocery shopping. Use up what you have in your fridge, freezer,
and pantry before going grocery shopping. With a little bit of creativity,
you might just be surprised with what you can come up with for meals...without
a trip to the store.
2. Pick a cabinet. Empty it. Get rid of what you don't need. Wipe it
clean. Put what you're keeping back. Stand back and give yourself a pat on
the back.
3. Go through your coat closet. It's a great time of year to inventory
winter gear...coats, hats, scarves, gloves, boots. Put anything you and your
family no longer wishes to wear in a donation box...folks will be looking for
warm weather wear at local charities. Alternately, take photos of these items
and post them on Facebook, offering them for lost-cost or free to your friends.
Determine if you can get by with what you have. If not, make a list of items to
purchase.
4. Weed out kid stuff. Christmas is coming soon. That means it's a great
time of year to help your kids/grandkids weed out some toys, games, stuffed
animals, trinkets, etc. they no longer use and love.
5. Computer clean up. Delete 25 files (documents, spreadsheets,
presentations, graphics, etc.) that you no longer need. Feeling ambitious?
Delete 50. When you're done, empty your computer's 'recycle bin.'
Get rid of clutter and you may just find that it was blocking the door
your've been looking for.
