7 TO DOs Before the Last Autumn Leaf Falls
Where I live, the leaves are just beginning to change colors, signifying
the pathway into winter. Here are a handful of TO DOs for you to accomplish
before the last autumn leaf falls and Jack Frost comes to town.
1. Furnace inspection and filter change
Now is the time to call for your annual inspection and cleaning, before it
really gets cold and everyone is trying to schedule. If you can't get it done
right away, at least be sure to put in a clean filter. A clean filter really
improves air quality, so don't skip this important step...especially if you or
someone in your house has allergies or asthma.
2. Fireplace maintenance and wood pile
If you prefer to heat your home with wood, then it's time to get your fireplace
or wood burner in working order. Also, be sure you have a good stock pile of
wood to start the season. If you're going to need to get more wood mid-season,
now is a good time to secure a source.
3. Vacuum dryer vent and refrigerator coils
Now is a good time to vacuum the dryer vent and refrigerator coils of all the
lint and dust that have built up since the spring. Your appliances will run more
efficiently, will last longer, and you may prevent a house fire. Most hardware
stores carry hoses and brushes that attach to your home vacuum or shop vac to
make this job easier.
4. Remove, clean and store yard art
Enjoy an 'Indian Summer' day by taking your yard art out of your flower beds.
Clean everything off. Make any necessary repairs. Discard any that are beyond
repair. Store them in a dry place until spring. If you keep them near your lawn
mower, you'll be sure to find them again when it's time to put them back out.
5. Finish any painting projects
This is perfect painting weather for many areas. Windows can still be opened for
ventilation. Low humidity and cooler temperatures allow your paint to dry
faster. You'll be cooler and more comfortable, too. Interior and exterior
painting can be completed, as well as crafty/DIY projects.
6. Update Christmas card list
Check those addresses now instead of waiting until you're busy with all the
other demands of the holiday season. If you're really ambitious, print mailing
labels to really save time later.
7. Fall/Winter bucket list
Have some fun with this one. Fall and winter provide their own unique
opportunities. Pick apples. Go on a fall color tour. Get lost in a corn maze.
Test your bravery in a haunted house. Go on a hayride. Learn to ski or ice
skate. Build a snowman or an igloo. Learn to knit or crochet. Make a personal
list and a family list. Have fun checking them off after you enjoy each
activity. Challenge yourself to complete the list!
P.S. Speaking of a great activity this year that can actually put some extra
cash in your pocket, autumn is a fantastic time of year to host your very
own garage sale...a great way to make money and eliminate clutter at the same
time. In fact, if you'd like to get rid of your clutter by hosting your most

Staying Organized with Nail Polish
We have a small collection of tools in our workbench in the basement, in
a drawer in the kitchen, and on a pegboard in the garage. To keep the tools in
their correct home, we painted a small area on their handles with three
different colored nail polishes to indicate the three different areas. This
keeps the tools organized and in the correct areas.
After a car trip, I discovered another idea for nail polish. We like to have
cords and adapters in each car for charging two cell phones. I organized and
then marked, with different colored nail polish, the cords and adapters for each
car. I also nail polished the edges of the cords and adapters so that it was
easier to tell which way the cords went into the adapters.
