I Almost Deleted It. Almost.
Write to Scott. This message is sitting in my email inbox. I sent it to
myself about a week ago, as a reminder. It's still sitting there.
It has been a busy week. Lots of work. Lots of driving. Lots of appointments,
errands, TO DOs, and projects for my business, my family, and organizations I
help out. Non-stop.
Fast forward to this morning when I a received a video suggestion in an email
newsletter entitled, 'In Praise of Slowness' given by journalist Carl Honore.
The title caught my eye, but when I noticed it was 20 minutes long, I almost
deleted it. Almost.
And then something told me to watch it, despite my long list of TO Dos and the
fact that this would throw me behind schedule by 20 minutes. I grabbed a cup of
coffee, sat down, turned off my email and phone notifications, and allowed
myself to quietly listen.
I was only a few moments in when I realized how much I was enjoying this talk,
and how important Carl's message is, and how there was no way I was going to
do anything else until I watched all the way through.
As I was viewing, I thought of Scott...a friend from years ago who was on my
bowling team. Nicest guy in the world...a fire fighter...and, I found out
through the grapevine years later, a family man. He always made me laugh. I was
only 18 or 19 then when we met.
The years went by, life went on, and, like so many people we connect with in
our lives, Scott and I lost touch.
Last week, another friend from my old bowling league texted to tell me that
Scott has been battling cancer. It was heartbreaking to hear. That day, I sent
an email to myself that said simply 'Write to Scott.'
Then life took over. Busy, busy, busy, busy...
...until the video this morning. It stopped me in my tracks...and reminded me of
the importance of slowing down. Suddenly everything I had to do today became
insignificant. Everything...except writing that letter to Scott.
As soon as the video ended, I went outside on my deck. I closed my eyes, thought
about what I wanted to say. And I wrote that letter. I didn't type it up quickly
on my computer. Rather, I took the time to gather my thoughts carefully and
wrote it by hand on nice stationery with my favorite pen. It took me about 30
minutes. When I was done, I placed it in an envelope, addressed it, stamped it,
and placed it in the mailbox.
As I deleted that reminder from my inbox a few moments ago, I said a prayer for
Scott that he beats this, and also for his family to remain strong through his
treatments.
Every now and then, it's good to get that tap on the shoulder...that reminder
indicating why slowing down now and then is a necessity in this fast-paced
life...that reminder that tells us to refocus and zone in on what really
matters.
Keep an eye out for these miracle messages. They're there, if you take the
time to notice them.

Week Beginning September 30
1. Decorate for Halloween. Pull out your decorations from last year and
display anything, inside and/or outside your home, that still looks good. Weed
out anything that no longer suits you and bring it to your donation center.
Someone else may be able to use what you don't want for their own decor.
2. Make a 5-day meal plan. Maybe Meatless Monday, Taco Tuesday,
Chicken Wednesday, Slow Cooker Meal Thursday, and Fish Friday. Eat out or
eat leftovers on the weekend.
3. Clean all faucets. Disinfect all faucets (sinks, showers, tubs). Then,
make them shine with no smudges or fingerprints to be seen.
4. Restock on something that's running out. Whether it's toilet paper,
postage stamps, or salt for your water softener, stock up this week.
5. Vacuum (and spot clean) your area rugs. Welcome fall by vacuuming
and spot cleaning any area rugs.
If you will only pause, as you hurry through your days, take a minute to look
at passersby, beyond cursory skin-deep analysis, all the way into their eyes,
what beauty you might find woven from the life threads there.
