The Benefits of Paying a Daily Visit to the Alone Zone
In today's increasingly connected world, achieving solitude seems to have
become a lost art for many. Often, we equate solitude with people who are
anti-social, sad, or lonely. On the contrary, those who take advantage of alone
time have more opportunities for increased productivity, relaxation, and
enjoyment in life.
Alone time...
1. Allows you to focus and concentrate better
2. Provides time for you to think deeply
3. Helps you sort through your problems and challenges, often allowing you
to gain a fresh perspective through self-reflection
4. Gives you time to get to know yourself better through self-discovery
5. Serves as time to evaluate your goals and measure your progress
6. Builds mental strength
7. Sparks your creativity
8. Gives you time for YOU...the person most people most often neglect is
themselves
9. Enhances the quality of your relationships with others, because it gives
you time to truly appreciate them
10. Reboots your mind and helps you unwind both physically and mentally
11. Increases tolerance and relaxation so you are less irritable or stressed
12. Helps you get more done
How do you find time alone?
It may seem incredibly difficult, these days, to find time alone in a world full
of responsibilities, tasks, errands, housework, career/business, friends,
family, phone notifications, etc. But it definitely can be done. Some strategies
include:
-- Temporarily unplugging and disconnecting from social media and technology
-- Using your commute time
-- Getting up earlier than other family members, or staying up later
-- Closing your door while at work...or at home, from time to time, as well
-- Schedule alone time in advance (This is very important. Treat 'time alone'
just as important as a doctor or dentist appointment. Get it on your calendar!)
-- Use your lunch break
-- Leave the area where most people are (work in an office conference room...or
take yourself out to a park for an hour while your spouse watches the kids)
What can you do when you're alone?
Being alone can range from visiting Machu Picchu, Peru...to simply closing
your eyes in a crowd of people. Here are some simple ideas:
-- Engage in a hobby or activity you love such as crafting, reading,
photography, baking, or playing a video game
-- Pamper yourself with a manicure, pedicure, facial, bubble bath, or a simple
cup of hot tea (uninterrupted) on your porch
-- Exercise...like going for a bike ride, a run, or a walk, or do Yoga
-- Meditate, do breathing exercises, or simply sit quietly watching the ocean
or a river
Author and critic Maya Mannes said, 'The great omission in American life is
solitude. Not loneliness, for this is an alienation that thrives most in the
midst of crowds, but that zone of time and space free from outside pressure
which is the incubator of the spirit.'
Alone time is about the 4 R's: Recuperate, Refresh, Recharge, and Reboot your
body, mind, and soul. Take the time each day to quiet the constant background
noise in your life and embrace time alone.
I do this for myself every single day (sometimes it's only 15 minutes...other
times it's a few hours), and I've found that the Alone Zone is a very pleasant
place for a daily visit.

Week Beginning October 14th
1. Clean out one box in your basement or attic. It's a lot of work to
organize an entire basement or attic, so don't plan on doing that. Instead,
choose one box at a time and get the job started. Bring one box to a well-lit
area and sort through it. There are likely to be one of three scenarios in that
box: a) You don't need the items in it. In this case, put these items in a
Donation box or the trash. b) You do need (or want) the items in it. In this
case, either incorporate those items, in a more visible manner, into your life,
or tuck them away again in a labeled container. c) You're not sure what to do
with these items. In this case, highly consider donating or getting rid of them.
It's indecision that is one of the main causes of clutter OR give yourself a
deadline date to get rid of it. Put a date on your calendar 30 days from today.
If you don't need these items by that date, donate or trash that box without
even opening it.
2. Choose and donate one book. Most people have collections of books
that have been gathering dust for years. Find one you'll never read again and
donate it to your local library...or sell it to your local half-price book
store.
3. Dust a super dusty surface. Most folks have that one dusty surface
they've been avoiding like the plague. Get it dusted off this week.
4. Donate winter gear. Inventory your winter gear and make a donation
box filled with anything that no longer fits your body or your style. People
are seeking out warm weather gear now...so you'll be reducing your clutter
and helping out others at the same time.
5. Stow summer sports gear. Do you have summer sports gear taking up
space in prime storage space in your house? If your family doesn't plan on using
baseball, golf, swimming, soccer and other summer sports played outdoors until
next season, hibernate these items for the season in a cool, dry, out-of-the way
storage spot. If you're not storing in a see-through box, be sure to label the
box well.
'I have to be alone very often. I'd be quite happy if I spent from Saturday
night until Monday morning alone in my apartment. That's how I refuel.'
---Audrey Hepburn
