When Perfectionism Makes Sense...
and When It's Detrimental
Do you ever have bad hair days? I do. And, today is one of those days. I
often ask myself, 'Why do I spend so much time trying to get my hair just
right?' When I think about it, I guess it doesn't matter what I am up to,
whether it is running errands, cooking dinner or working from my home office, it
simply makes me happy to know that my hair looks and feels a certain way. Good
hair days are just one of the small joys in life. Of course, sometimes there's
nothing I can do about a bad hair day but tie my hair back and move on with
my life.
For you, perfection may not have anything to do with a picture-perfect ponytail
or flawlessly flattened hair. Maybe you struggle with always wanting your
Rubbermaid containers always stacked neatly, your kids' doctor's records filed
in the right folder, or junk mail in the recycle bin instead of cluttering the
desk in your home office. Whatever it looks like, perfectionism can be a great
motivator that leads to contentment and a feeling of accomplishment. It can
always cause problems.
Here are my top 3 reasons why being a perfectionist make sense
1. You love the end result. You are a determined worker and probably get
tasks accomplished on a level that other people don't normally achieve. Your
process of handling each detail meticulously shows in the final result.
2. You love the process of completing a task creatively. In order to meet
your personal goals or complete tasks your boss gives you, perfectionism makes
sense when you use your drive to work through problems and find creative
alternatives to complete a task.
3. You are a hard worker, have high standards, and strive for success.
But, everyone is bound to make mistakes. Perfectionism is great if you use it to
notice mistakes, correct them, and remember to avoid making the same mistake
next time.
On the flip side of those positive characteristics to being a perfectionist,
chronic perfectionism can also have its disadvantages.
Here are my top 3 reasons why being a perfectionist is detrimental
You're never happy with yourself or the end result. Perfectionism is
detrimental when you are more focused on your wrong-doings than successfully
completing a project. In turn, you can become genuinely unhappy with your
abilities, leave little room to enjoy tasks you're working on, become
overwhelmed by the fear of making more mistakes, and never be satisfied with
the completion of a task.
You feel that you shouldn't start something if you can't complete it that
day. So, rather than working on tasks and projects in pieces, you delay
beginning...which means you end up with a ton of incompleted TO DOs.
You feel you have to do everything yourself. If you feel that nobody
out there can match your standards, you may tend to take the whole world on
your shoulders, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and perhaps, even bitter
towards others.
In summary, if you consider yourself a perfectionist, and you channel your need
for perfection in the right direction, that trait can actually work for you.
That being said, always be aware of the pitfalls, and regularly do a quick check
on yourself to recognize those disadvantages when they're happening.

Theme of the Week: Being too busy. Enjoy our home page quotes, that
reflect our theme, for added inspiration and motivation this week
getorganizednow.com
Week Beginning October 7th
1. Celebrate the season with something 'pumpkin spice.' Did you know that
many treats associated with this flavor craze don't even contain any pumpkin at
all? Ingredients like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and vanilla, tend to
mimic the flavoring you'd taste in pumpkin pie. Regardless, a pumpkin spice
latte. a bagel smeared with pumpkin spice cream cheese, or even pumpkin spice
gum can help make fall a bit more fun and flavorful.
2. Cut back perennials. While I leave some perennials alone until spring
(those that actually look nice over the winter months), I cut back many of
my perennials this time of the year. Plus, doing so means I won't be overloaded
with plants that need to be cut when spring arrives.
3. Find one kitchen gadget you never use. Pass it on to someone who
can use it. If you know of nobody, send it on to your favorite charity...or
pitch it. It's just taking up unnecessary real estate in your drawer.
4. Clean your car's interior windows. While the outside windows of
our vehicles are often cleaned at the car wash, the interior windows are
often neglected. If you have kids, grandkids, or pets who ride along in your
car, chances are you have fingerprints and smudges on them. Get them clean
this week.
5. Consider your Christmas card photo. If you send out Christmas/holiday
greeting cards that include photos, choose a photo to use for that purpose
this week. If you don't have a photo yet, set up a photo shoot to get it done.
'Too many people spend too much time trying to perfect something before they
actually do it. Instead of waiting for perfection, run with what you've got, and
fix it along the way.'
