Use the Simplicity Strategy in Your Life
Life can seem overwhelming at times, seeming like there are just too many things
to do and not enough hours in a day. Many people say that their TO DO lists are
miles long and I believe it. In fact, a few weeks ago, I was looking at a
client's TO DO list (let's call her Jill)...it was on one of those yellow legal
pads and went on and on for 9 pages. When I asked her how she was coming along
with it, she revealed that she was so overwhelmed that she hadn't done a single
task listed in the past week!
Jill was not making her life easier with her TO DO list. She was making it
much harder, more stressful, and less productive.
So, I shared my 'Simplicity Strategy' with her: You can't think about or do
everything at once. You have to zero in on one thing at a time.
This applies to decisions you have to make, like which insurance company to
choose or what hotels you might stay at for an upcoming trip.
This applies to organizing, cleaning, or redecorating your house.
This applies to gift buying for the holiday season or meal planning for the
week.
This applies to getting your calendar in order.
This applies to NOT allowing the yellow legal pad to take over your sanity.
For Jill, we went through her 9 pages of TO DOs one by one, and I had her circle
four TO DOs that were priorities...meaning they were definitely important enough
to do, and they had some urgency to them.
I then had her jot those 4 TO DOs on a blank piece of paper...and cross them off
her yellow legal pad. The legal pad was then filed away...and Jill won't even
give it a second thought until the 4 TO DOs on her list are done.
Then, I had Jill prioritize the four items she chose...1, 2, 3, 4. The plan was
for her to work on number 1 until it's done, then number two, then three, and
finally four.
In one day, Jill was able to complete all four tasks. She was beyond thrilled
and energized. Then what? She simply repeated this process, choosing four more
tasks for tomorrow.
That's it. That's the system she can use forever and ever. And it works.
By the way, be very careful about making your actual TO DOs complicated. For
instance, 'call Bob with account information' is a very simple TO DO. You pick
up your phone, call Bob, and give him your account information. You're done.
BUT, if your TO DO is 'shop around for a new refrigerator,' that's NOT a TO DO,
but rather a PROJECT. That project likely has 10 or more TO DOs (steps) attached
to it that may include a) making a list of stores you want to check out, b)
coming up with a budget, c) deciding on the refrigerator features you want, d)
physically going to each store, etc.
When you're trying to complete a project that has many TO DOs, be sure you list
out all the steps, and tackle them one by one. If a project has 15 steps, you
might choose to do two of those today, two next week, etc. depending on how
quickly it has to be accomplished. In doing so, you're getting your other TO DOs
done...but also making progress on your 'projects.'
Use the Simplicity Strategy in your life. You'll make getting things done
more do-able!

Week Beginning October 28th
1. Finalize travel plans for Thanksgiving. If you're headed out of town
for Thanksgiving, finalize any plane, hotel, car rental, etc. plans this
week.
2. Clean the toaster oven. Yesterday, I thoroughly cleaned out my toaster
oven, getting rid of all crumbs and burnt-on food from the surfaces, and wiping
away smudges from the glass. I scrubbed the removable tray and grate as best
as possible, and then put both in the dishwasher cycle.
3. Gather outdoor tools for snow/ice removal. Where I live in Wisconsin,
we're experiencing our first frosts of the year. We have our snow blower ready
to go, as well as salt/kitty litter for our driveway and walkway. Our snow
shovels are ready for action. Our ice scrapers are in the car. It's better
to be early and prepared, than late and unprepared.
4. Weed out old magazines. Recycle as many old magazines and newspapers
as you can.
5. Replace old, ratty towels. If your towels are ripped, torn, stringy,
and worn out, replace them or add them to your holiday wish list.

at once.'
