Open Your Fridge...Say Cheese!
I always make a list before I go grocery shopping, but sometimes I forget to jot
something down. So, in addition to doing this, I open my refrigerator and food
cabinets...and take quick photos that picture the food items I have. In doing
so, as I'm walking through the aisles, if I'm wondering if I have something at
home that I forgot to check on, I can quickly glance at the photos and find
out.

clean and organized home has changed my life (and my family's lives) for the
better. Thanks for all the great tips and ideas...yours and your readers!

A Reader Asks, 'My Spouse Passed Away. How Do I Organize Through Grief?'
A GON Reader Asks
Do you have any info on organizing through grief? My husband passed away 3
months ago and I had to move at the same time. Everyone tells me one box at a
time. But I'm lucky if I can do 15 minutes!

Maria Gracia Responds
Hi Barbara,
I'm so very sorry to hear about your husband passing away. My deepest
condolences to you and your family.
Organizing what's left behind can often be extremely difficult for those who
are grieving. Here are some thoughts I have for you to sort through his
belongings.
1) Don't put even more stress on yourself. You've just gone through the
death of your husband and a move, so don't be too hard on yourself. This is a
lot for a person to go through at once. If you can organize for 15 minutes at a
time, great. 5 minutes sometimes? Great. Just one item donated per day? Great.
Anything you're able to do and any time you're able to dedicate has just gotten
you a little bit further than you were yesterday.
2) Sort through non-sentimental belongings first. Non-sentimental
belongings might include items like old paperwork, reference books, tools, and
other items that are not necessarily as meaningful. It may be more challenging
to part with his clothing, the mug he used all the time, his briefcase, or
photographs, for example. So, focus on the less sentimental items first, and
leave the more sentimental items in a box to deal with once you've reduced
the volume.
3) Can it go to another home? Sometimes, people feel better about giving
some personal belongings to other family members who would treasure them. Keep
this in mind if this is the case. If not, donating to a charity often helps in
the healing process because your husband's belongings are helping someone else
out. Also, remember that you can always take photos of items you want to
remember, but don't necessarily have the space or need to keep.
4) Don't hold in your emotions. There is no doubt that, as you're
sorting, you're going to be emotional. Sometimes, you might even feel like
crying. It's OK and it's normal. It's all part of the healing process, and
expressing those feelings openly may even help you move through this very
difficult sorting process sooner than later.
Wishing you peace and comfort always,
