Quick Charging Your Personal Batteries
Sarah had a long week. She was in charge of a large fundraising gala in
three weeks, and there was something to take care of every day. She also worked
at a food pantry at her church. That was in addition to childcare, housework,
carpooling, and such.
She started to have insomnia, lying awake thinking of all she needed to do. The
next day she began with a large coffee trying to get her brain in gear after an
uneasy night. Loading the dishwasher after the kids had left for school, she
dropped a glass and burst into tears when it shattered. Wise enough to allow
herself to let out the stress with a good cry, she realized that something had
to give. She could not just walk away from her responsibilities, and she would
not want to, but she needed a break.
Leaving her cell phone inside where she could not hear it, she took her mug of
coffee and a book of poetry out to the back porch. For thirty minutes she
enjoyed the fresh air, the sound of birds, the sight of gorgeous autumn trees in
her back yard, and the poetry. She decided she could surely devote 15-30 minutes
a day to just being on her back porch, and that bit of time helped enormously.
Elaine's problem was different. While not in charge of any large committees, she
checked on her 85-year old mother every day. She was the volunteer secretary for
the small church she belonged to, and so she stopped in to check mail and
messages every day. And, since people knew she was the dependable sort, they
also tended to call on Elaine when they needed help with a project.
Walking the dog one evening, the word 'burnout' just popped into her head. 'If I
had a full time job, I would have a day off or the weekend off,' she realized,
'but my life has no time off at all.'
Right then and there she began to consider how she could make some changes. She
realized that she was not really indispensable. If something happened to her,
well, other people would have to deal with things. And so she decided to take at
least half a day off every week.
She joined a quilting group. She still visited her mother but she called into
the answering machine at church from home. Checking the mail twice a week was
plenty. Her spirits lifted. She felt less irritable, was more patient and even
lost a few pounds because she was not stress eating.
All of us need time to ourselves to recharge, whether it is alone on the back
porch, or with a group of friends. This week, as you go about your many
obligations, find time to do a personal recharge. We make time to recharge our
electronic devices...surely we are just as deserving of an emotional
replenishment.

Everyone gets 24 hours in each day. Because our time is so precious, and because
it vanishes so quickly, it's vitally important to use that time well.
What do you get accomplished each day?
If the answer is, 'next to nothing', or 'not nearly as much as I would like,'
then it's definitely worth it to take a look at what's on your TO DO list, and
if those items are helping you get to where you want to be.
Don't confuse activity with real accomplishments. Twiddling your thumbs is
activity, but it's not going to get you anywhere fast.
In light of this, I've recently discovered an incredible tool that will help you
get more done than you've ever imagined.
It's called The Action Machine, my husband and I BOTH use it, AND we highly
recommend it to anyone who wants to make the most of his or her day. Visit:

Theme of the Week: Purpose. Enjoy our home page quotes, that reflect
our theme, for added inspiration and motivation this week

Week Beginning October 21st
1. Clean your oven. This week, I got an emergency call from a teenager
who lives two houses away who was home alone. She was very anxious because her
smoke alarm was going off, and was very concerned about her house burning down.
I ran over and could smell smoke as soon as I entered the house. The source was
her oven. She was baking cookies and some build-up in her oven was causing the
smoke. We opened all the windows and put on the exhaust fan, and then the alarm
stopped. This is what prompted this TO DO this week: run the self-cleaning
utility on your oven...or manually clean your oven.
2. Get daily notifications of credit charges. This past week, I received
a notification of a pending $200 charge on my credit card, that I never placed.
Good thing I was receiving daily notifications of my charges from my credit card
company and spotted it immediately. Obviously, my card number was stolen, and I
was able to cancel the card and request a new one. Many credit card companies
offer this service at no charge. Each day, I get email notifications of any
charges made to the card, so I can handle fraudulent charges immediately. If
your card company doesn't offer this service, at minimum, scrutinize your
online statement to be sure you're only being billed for purchases you made.
3. Use a gift card you received. According to Consumer Reports, many
customers never use gift cards they receive...almost one-third of consumers!
This is often due to gift cards they've lost or forgotten about. When you
get a gift card, use it right away...or store all your gift cards in one place
so you can locate them, and schedule a deadline on your calendar to do so. If
you have gift cards sitting around, use one of them this week.
4. Organize purses, handbags, wallets, and briefcases. These portable
'tools' should be useful to us...not cluttered messes we have to dig through.
Weed them all out this week, and do yourself a favor...be sure you're only
carrying around items you really need.
5. Organize the refrigerator door. Get rid of any paperwork, coupons,
invitations, etc. that are no longer current. Tons of magnets? Remove a bunch of
them. Old photos? It may be time to put some in storage, or replace some old
with some new. Emergency list and/or list of household helpers (plumbers and
such)? Are the contacts and numbers still current? Empty everything off, wipe it
clean, and put only what you need back...in an organized, grid-like manner.
'Are you managing your energy well and using it for things that matter? Do
you stop to recharge before you push yourself to critically low levels? Unplug
to recharge.'
