It Was Like a Scene Right Out of Candid Camera...

When I drive my daughter to school, I often take a route that requires me to drive over a bridge. It's one of those small-town bridges that has a sidewalk, on each side of the road, that pedestrians can use. There is also a concrete barrier on both sides for safety reasons.

This morning, while crossing that bridge, I observed a female pedestrian on the sidewalk portion of the bridge, balancing her large purse on the chest-high concrete barrier. She appeared to be trying to dig something out of it...I'm guessing her cell phone. A second later, I saw a look of brief alarm as she grabbed her purse strap just in time...the purse nearly slipped off the bridge into the Rock River and would have if her reflexes were not quick.

Yes, she was able to save her purse. Hopefully, this stroke of pure luck will discourage her, in the future, from taking this sort of chance with something she would likely be very sad to lose forever.

Thinking about this though, reminds me of how sometimes, we put ourselves into our own predicaments.

--The person who puts a coat over a chair, instead of in the closet...and then notices his son following suit

--The person who can't say no...who agrees to every request for her time, even though she can barely keep up with her own family and job

--The person who procrastinates so long, that someone else competing for a promotion in work who is less qualified, gets that promotion

--The person who takes on an entire Thanksgiving meal for 20 people, and then spends the entire holiday in the kitchen, while everyone else is having fun, barely getting a moment to chat with her guests

Of course, everyone does something they're not really thinking about now and then. Case in point...I was at the swimming pool a few nights ago watching my daughter swim. As I was sitting on the bleachers positioned right against the wall, I remembered I had to give the coach $10 as a donation for an upcoming swim meet.

I pulled $10 out of my wallet, and apparently I wasn't holding on to it tight enough because not even one second later, it got sucked right out of my hand and into the ventilation system directly behind me. I kid you not... it was like a scene right out of Candid Camera.

Because it was $10, it was somewhat comical. I wouldn't have been too amused if it was a $50 or $100.

Lessons learned. 1) No more sitting near that vent if I could avoid it. 2) No more pulling money, paper, or anything light out of my purse if I'm anywhere near that vent.

Sometimes, it takes something to actually happen for us to avoid getting ourselves into the same situation in the future.

Other times, we just have to think far enough in advance of the possibilities that COULD happen if we take (or don't take) a particular action.

For instance...

--the person who realizes that if he puts his coat in the closet, instead of over the chair, he'll be setting a good example for his kids. The kids are certainly not going to bother if dad doesn't

--The person who realizes if she says yes to every request for her time, that she's going to end up in a very stressful situation. So, in turn, she gets better at saying no

--The person who wants a promotion in work, and who realizes if he doesn't take immediate action, he's going to lose that opportunity

--The person who knows that taking on an entire Thanksgiving meal for 20 people by herself is going to result in a long, exhausting, unfulfilling day for her. So, she decides to roast the turkey and bake dessert only...and for the remainder of the meal items, she asks everyone coming to bring a dish to pass

Being mindful of not only what we are (or aren't) doing, and the possible outcomes of either, can make a big difference in our lives. We hear an awful lot about being mindful these days, but I think the reminders are extremely helpful, especially in this society of hectic schedules and unlimited, potential distractions

Being mindful means we take the time to slow down, breathe in the situation around us, stop trying to constantly multi-task, and zone in so we can focus on what we're doing.

Mindfulness is key to good organization. It helps keep our purses out of the water...and $10 bills from being drawn into Never-Never-Land.

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning November 11th

1) Do you have photos sitting in a box that you've been meaning to organize? Why not set up a portable table and work on this project a little bit each night? Even if you could only sort for 10 minutes at a time, at least the project will be started and progressing.

2) Be sure you have a supply of throat lozenges. 'Tis the season for sore throats. Buy your favorite brand and divide them up into plastic Ziploc bags...some for home, some for the office, some in your purse or briefcase, and some in the car. In fact, as soon as I'm done writing this newsletter, I'm headed out to Walgreen's to check this TO DO off my list.

3) Get your car serviced. Is one or more of your vehicles in need of an oil change or another service-check? Get the task done...or, if needed, make an appointment with your car dealer, mechanic, or service station.

4) Is your snow-blower ready to go? If you live in a cold weather climate, like I do, snow can easily start falling in November. I even saw a light dusting last month! Our snow blower is ready to go as soon as we need it. Is yours?

5) Weed out your inbox. Delete a bunch of unneeded email messages in either your email inbox, email folders, or both. Can you delete 100 or more?

  In Closing
