  Fabulous Reader Tip

My Focus This Month Is...

Every month, when a new year begins, I fill in a 'new word' to this statement... My focus this month is...

In past months I've chosen forgiveness, encouragement, giving back, compassion, and confidence. I choose a word for the month, and I focus on it every day during that month.

It's the first word I say to myself in the morning...and I do something each day to compliment that word.

For instance, when my word was 'compassion,' on one day I visited an elderly neighbor with a basket of tea and honey, on the next day I sent a small donation to a childrens' hospital, on the day after that, I donated shoes I was no longer wearing to a charity. You get the idea.

Having one chosen word in mind gives me something good to focus on and achieve every day. I did this all of last year, and am starting it right up again at the beginning of the new year.

GON Reader Letter: I Could Be More Organized with My Organizing

Maria,

You're wonderful. I love organizing. I wish there were some way I could be more organized in my organizing. Crazy huh? I feel like I need an assistant...a little voice that says 'Cheryl, come on. Let's organize for the next 15 minutes.' Maybe a little timer that speaks or goes off and says something inspiring and motivating...or a little robot, dolly, or an elf.

Cheryl Crane

Note from Maria Gracia to Cheryl:

Cheryl, How about this? The second you see an organizing newsletter or mini edition from me, organize for 15 minutes. Consider that your tap on the shoulder. (Smile.) Thanks for writing and for being so sweet!

A Reader Asks, 'I Heard Brushing After Eating Isn't Good...What Should I Do?'

A GON Reader Asks

Dentists recommend waiting half an hour after eating before brushing teeth because food acid weakens the enamel and makes it vulnerable. What could you do instead? Maybe one could drink or rinse the mouth with mint in water?

Magdalen Bray

Maria Gracia Responds

Thanks for this interesting question, Magdalen.

First off, many people brush their teeth solely for the purposes of removing food particles or to get rid of bad breath. These are important, of course, but even more so, you want to primarily brush to remove plaque and prevent damage.

Many folks do the obligatory tooth-brushing first thing in the morning and last thing at night...usually in a 20-second rush. If you're not brushing for at least two minutes, you're doing your pearly whites a disservice. Use a timer and give your teeth the love they deserve.

1) Brush first thing in the morning BEFORE breakfast. This will get rid of morning breath and reduce bacteria in your mouth.

2) Brush last thing in the evening, right before bed. This will remove old food, reduce the growth of bacteria, and reduce bad breath. In other words, brushing twice per day is enough.

3) If you're feeling like you have to brush after you eat, IF you just ate an acidic food or drink, like an orange or a can of soda, brush 30 to 60 minutes afterwards. If you brush too soon, you'll actually be forcing the acid deeper into your teeth.

What you CAN do instead is drink plain water (swish it around your mouth as much as you can) or chew a piece of sugar-free gum, which will increase the amount of saliva, and help 'rinse away' the acid and bacteria from your teeth naturally.

4) However, if you eat something sticky, like taffy or dried fruit, brush immediately after eating if you can. In this case, the longer you wait, the better your chances of developing cavities...which obviously, we don't want. Better yet, avoid eating sticky foods most of the time.

5) Brushing your teeth harder is NOT better, and can in fact be damaging. Be gentle.

6) Use a soft bristle brush.

7) Only use a pea-sized dab of toothpaste.

8) You do not need to rinse after brushing. When you do, you're getting rid of the fluoride that can be fighting cavities. This is why you should only use a very small amount of toothpaste.

9) Don't forget to brush your tongue.

10) Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or if the bristles are frayed. Also consider replacing it if you have been sick to avoid re-infecting yourself with germs found on your toothbrush.

It's important to take care of your teeth. Once they are gone, they are gone. Hope this helps a bit,

Maria

All people have clutter to some degree.

You may have a little bit of clutter sitting around--things that aren't really serving any purpose, taking up unnecessary space, gathering dust, and causing a bit of frustration.

Or perhaps you have LOADS of clutter and it's causing your life to be turned upside down--you can't find things easily, you feel like your home is bursting at the seams with STUFF, you have to climb over piles and boxes to get to anything, and you feel overwhelmed and frustrated.

MOST people are somewhere right in the middle of these two situations.

For anyone who just has a little bit of clutter, have no doubt in your mind that CLUTTER GROWS, and small challenges soon turn into large issues.

BUT, here's something NEW I discovered...

Clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may have in your closet, the overload of toys in the toy room, the boxes of stuff in the basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home.

Clutter actually invades your life in FOUR forms...
