To Do, or NOT To Do

As the new year begins, it's a time to start off fresh. The best way to do this is to make a list of things you want to do AND a list of the things you do NOT want to do in the upcoming year. Here are some...feel free to add a bunch of your own.

TO DO:

* Make time to exercise: Make exercise become a part of your daily routine. Exercise not only makes you feel better physically, but it also improves your mental state by releasing endorphins in the brain.

* Drink more water: The benefits of increasing your water intake go on and on and on. Drinking water flushes out the body, keeps skin moisturized, and is a much better alternative to sugary options.

* Read more...watch TV less: Sitting in front of a TV for hours a day really serves no purpose. Opt for a good read, over a so-so TV show, whenever you can.

* Unplug a little more: Too much time staring at computer screens or other electronic devices can wreak havoc on your eyes and your brain. Give your eyes and mind regular breaks throughout the day.

* Have dinner together: Reserve at least one night a week to have dinner together as a family and make sure everyone is present. This helps to keep your family better connected.

* Reconnect with friends: Good friends are hard to find. Make an effort to reconnect with any friends that you haven't spent time with in a while.

* Donate things you no longer need or use: Decluttering is easier than you may think. Donate items around the house you no longer use. This will help to clear up space as well as make your home more organized.

* Be more thankful: Take the time to be thankful for the things that you have, and the people who are in your life.

* Take some chances: You'll never know what you're capable of if you stay cozy and comfy. Step outside your box now and then.

THINGS NOT TO DO:

* Don't overschedule yourself: Calendars can fill up quickly with meetings, school events, church functions, and everything else we commit to. Limit yourself to the things you really enjoy doing and remind yourself that it is OK to say no sometimes.

* Don't cheat yourself out of sleep: We all need downtime to reboot our engines and should not try to get by with less sleep than we actually need.

* Don't let negative people turn you negative: Negative people can have the strange effect of making us negative too. Surround yourself with positive thinking people and not with those who tend to bring you down.

* Don't let work take over your life: Careers are important. But don't let work become your whole life. Find a suitable balance between work life and home life and try to keep the two separate.

* Don't always put yourself last: It is easy to place your own needs behind your spouse, children, aging parents, etc. Remind yourself that it is OK, and encouraged, to put yourself first sometimes.

* Don't always depend on others: Learn how to do things, that someone else normally does, for yourself. If your spouse always does the finances, team up and do it together so you know how. If your spouse always does the snow blowing when it snows, be sure you learn how to do it too. If your co-worker always does the weekly company report, learn how to do it yourself. For one reason or another, you may have to take over that other person's responsibility one day. Become even more self-reliant than you are now.

* Don't take life so seriously: Think back to a year ago today. What was your biggest worry in life? Chances are, you probably can't even remember. Don't let the day's seemingly big crisis bring you down. Before you know it, it will be just a distant memory or, in a lot a cases, not even a memory at all. Don't sweat the small stuff. Most of the time, it really is just that.

* Tell your loved ones that you love them: Yes, they probably know you love them, but tell them anyway. Repeat often.

Happy New Year...may your next 365 days ahead, and thereafter, be healthy, happy, and organized!

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning December 30

1) Get your calendar in place. Whether you use a calendar on your phone or a paper calendar, be sure it includes all pertinent data for 2018... birthdays, anniversaries, events, etc.

2) Stow away Christmas. We won't be taking our tree down until January 6th this year (our tradition is to take it down the day after the feast of the Epiphany), but we do begin putting Christmas away...a few items a day...the day after Christmas. So, on day one, we may stow away our Christmas sled decoration, snow globes, and any holiday items in the kitchen, on day two we may stow away some of our Christmas village houses and wreaths, etc. That gives us a good head start before January 6th when we take down the tree and the remaining Christmas decor.

3) Create a system to collect tax documents. I know it's not fun to think about taxes at the beginning of the year, but the forms you'll need (1099s, W2s, etc.) will be trickling in soon. Be sure you have a file folder or manila envelope (stored in one consistent place) to hold these forms as they arrive so they don't get lost.

4) Focus heavily on one goal. Sure, you can have more than one goal, but it's important to focus heavily on just one of them. What's your most important priority? Spending more time with family? Saving a few extra bucks? Losing some inches around your waist? Choose the most important and make that goal your priority this year.

5) Stock up the pantry. January, in many parts of the world, comes with harsh winter storms. Sometimes, it's too dangerous to leave the warmth and safety of your home. This is why it's so important to stock up your pantry with non-perishable food items, like canned tuna, pasta, tomato sauce, beans, and other foods that can sustain you should a storm prevent a trip to the supermarket.

  In Closing

--T.S. Eliot
