Be Ruthless With Your Clutter
Clutter is one sneaky animal. It starts out slowly, barely noticeable by anyone.
A few things here and a few things there show up in your home without causing
much of a stir. Then, as time goes by, those same few things begin to multiply,
slowly at first...but then quickly pick up momentum. Before you even know how it
happened, you now have a house full of clutter. How did this happen?
1. Paper is the enemy. We've all done it. You arrive home and grab the
mail and immediately throw it on the counter to go through later. Then the next
day you do the same thing. Five pieces of mail quickly becomes ten, then
fifteen. Then suddenly, it's the second highest peak in North America. Time to
head this paper mountain off at the pass.
Don't set down the mail, or any other paper for that matter, to go through
later. Immediately sort through it, recycling the junk paper, and put anything
you need to keep where it needs to go. It is MUCH easier, and way less time
consuming, to sort through five pieces of paper than it is through 55 and your
empty countertop will thank you.
2. Break up with your stuff. Clutter tends to get a hold on us because it
has a magic power. Its superpower is to make us believe that whatever it is, we
'might' need it later. This is the thought process that a cupboard full of
souvenir coffee mugs or a closet full of too small T-shirts from year's past
thrive in.
Step up and show the clutter who's boss. Odds are that if you haven't had a sip
from the 'I Love NY' mug or sported the 'Daytona Spring Break' T-shirt in the
past few months or, God forbid YEARS, you probably never will again. Don't stay
attached to things because they were important in year's past. You will always
have the memories from things you did in the past and really don't need a
keychain or shot glass to remind you. Happy memories are all you really need to
hang onto...and those don't require a fraction of storage space in your home.
3. Should I stay or should I go? The Clash said, 'If I go there will be
trouble and if I stay it will be double.' Don't use this philosophy when trying
to decide whether or not to hang on to things. With some decisions, it is better
to take time and think things through before acting. With decluttering, this is
not the case.
Don't take days, weeks or even months to decide if you need to hang on to
something. All this accomplishes is allowing more time for more clutter to pile
up. Use your first gut feeling when trying to declutter. Believe it or not, you
DO know what items you really need and which ones you don't. Hanging onto things
for the one time you MIGHT use them is a recipe for clutter pie. When push comes
to shove, if you give away that punch bowl and miraculously need one someday,
chances are you can borrow one from somebody who hasn't yet read this article.
4. Baby, bye, bye, bye. Clutter does not just show up one day. It is one
of those things that you yourself have to invite in. Fear not. It can be easier
to take back control than you may realize. The truth is, although you invited
the clutter in, it is also you who, ultimately, gets to decide just how long it
actually gets to stay. And with clutter being an unwanted guest, saying bye-bye
sooner, rather than later, proves you're being ruthless with your clutter...and
nice to yourself, your family, and your home!

A few weeks ago, I mentioned the fact that I have a solution for getting rid
of all the clutter in your life. This solution was so well received by
thousands of our readers, which I'm thrilled about. I've received so many
wonderful letters about all the clutter that's suddenly disappearing! This
being said, I know a lot of people missed the deadline that included not only
the solution, but a bunch of great bonuses. Life tends to get really busy
around the holidays and the first of the year. In light of this...I'm
extending my very special offer until January 22nd. Here's what it's all
about...
All people have clutter to some degree.
You may have a little bit of clutter sitting around--things that aren't really
serving any purpose, taking up unnecessary space, gathering dust, and causing a
bit of frustration.
Or perhaps you have LOADS of clutter and it's causing your life to be turned
upside down--you can't find things easily, you feel like your home is bursting
at the seams with STUFF, you have to climb over piles and boxes to get to
anything, and you feel overwhelmed and frustrated.
MOST people are somewhere right in the middle of these two situations.
For anyone who just has a little bit of clutter, have no doubt in your mind that
CLUTTER GROWS, and small challenges soon turn into large issues.
BUT, here's something NEW I discovered...
Clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may have in
your closet, the overload of toys in the toy room, the boxes of stuff in the
basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home.
Clutter actually invades your life in FOUR forms...
1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
3. Digital Clutter
4. Emotional Clutter
And once it's there, it begins to wreak all sorts of havoc...

Practice: Our theme of the week is 'practice' and my home page quotes
reflect that.
getorganizednow.com
Week Beginning January 13
1) Make a 'Fix It' List. It's never fun when a faucet is leaking, a
key is sticking on your keyboard, or the hem on your favorite pair of pants has
come loose. But the more you leave those items unattended, the more annoying
they tend to become. Make a list of things that need fixing in your home (and
your life for that matter). Pick one and focus on it until it's fixed. Then
pick another.
2) Clean under the oven. Trust me, if you haven't done this in awhile, or
ever for that matter, you may be dismayed how many bits of food and piles of
dust are likely under there...maybe even enough to fill up an entire dustpan. I
don't even have to move my oven to get to it...I just pull out the oven drawer
and vacuum it up.
3) Discard 10 items in your bathroom. This may 'seem' more difficult than
it actually is. Most people have tons of items in their bathrooms that are
expired or they have not used in months or even years. Some examples are
tattered towels, old hydrogen peroxide, perfume that gives you a headache, rusty
razors, old toothbrushes...I could go on and on.
'Unclutter your life. Unclutter your home. We feel best when everything
and everyone around us is in harmony and in balance. The peace and the beauty of
your home will raise you up, and give energy to your goals.'
