Don't Waste Time Waiting
There never seems to be enough hours in the day to get all of the things done
that we need to. Bills need to be paid, laundry needs to be done, and the
house needs to be cleaned. Meals need to be planned in between driving your kids
to practices or your aging parents to doctor's appointments. It sometimes seems
nearly impossible to fit everything in.
In reality, there may be more available time in our day if we are only able to
recognize where that time may be. Sometimes our full day has more free time than
we realize.
1) Use the waiting room. Although most doctor visits require an
appointment, often times we are still left waiting to get in to see the doctor.
A 1:00 appointment can suddenly turn into a 1:30 appointment if the office gets
backed up. Things like this are beyond our control, but it need not be wasted
time. Use this time waiting in the doctor's office to do your weekly meal
planning or to make your grocery list.
Doing these things in your unplanned waiting time will free up more time for you
later in the day. Always have a notepad and pen, or electronic device, so you're
prepared to make the most of your time.
And, by the way, try to get the earliest appointment you can...the later your
appointment is, the more of a chance your appointment will be delayed because of
all the appointments ahead of yours (people getting to their appointments late,
doctor's schedule running behind, etc.)
2) Be a dinner dynamo. Once dinner is prepared and in the oven, it may
seem like to good time to just sit down and wait for the timer to go off. But
since the kitchen may already be messed up a bit from the meal preparation, why
not get a jump start on the next day's meal?
If your meals are planned out, you can spend this time preparing any chopping or
mixing for the next night's dinner. Not only will you only have to clean up the
kitchen one time, you will also have a major jumpstart on the next day's meal.
3) Plan your grocery shopping hours. Clearly, the best time to hit the
grocery store is when the store is the least busy. Generally, that is NOT going
to be on a Saturday afternoon.
Hit the grocery store either early in the morning or later at night, preferably
mid-week, when the store tends to be less busy. This will make navigating the
aisles a lot faster and easier and will prevent you from having to wait in long
lines in order to check out.
4) Do your banking and bills online. The best way to avoid long lines
waiting at the bank is to not go there. So many banking features are now
available online, allowing you to complete transactions from your home computer
or Smartphone. Most bills can also be quickly paid online or through autopay,
making paying bills take literally seconds.
Think you're not a technical person? My dad (77 years old) wasn't technical at
all just a few years ago...now he pays all his bills online and is always
texting me YouTube videos or cute emojis. The ability to learn the newest
technology has no age limits.
5) Order movie tickets ahead of time. If you are a frequent movie goer,
you probably already know about the benefits of ordering your tickets online
ahead of time. Not only can you pick your seats, you can arrive at the theater
at whatever time you prefer without having to wait in line and worry about the
show being sold out. This allows you to see a movie without having to arrive
super early to get your seats or to avoid arriving to a sold-out show.
Speaking of movies, have you seen 'The Greatest Showman' yet? If you haven't,
get tickets. Trust me, it's fabulous!
6) Schedule spring appointments now. Although it may still be winter
where you live, it is not too early to start thinking ahead to spring. Lawn care
companies, outdoor repairs, or anything else that you typically wait until
spring to schedule may be better off being scheduled now. Getting on a company's
spring schedule will put you ahead of the 8-ball once spring hits and will
prevent you from having to wait for an open appointment later on.

Week Beginning January 6
1) Mend something. Mend a loose hem, a broken zipper, or a relationship
that has gone astray.
2) Recycle 25 outdated papers. Look on your family bulletin board, your
kitchen table, or in your filing cabinet. There are bound to be at least 25
outdated papers you can recycle right now.
3) Change the bed sheets on one bed. If you haven't changed the sheets
on a bed in your house for weeks, get to that task. Bed sheets that are being
slept on should go no longer than two weeks without being swapped out for
fresh ones.
4) Go on an email deletion frenzy. Set a timer for 15 minutes. How many
emails can you delete from your inbox? Delete anything that's obviously not
needed...like unsolicited email, advertisements you're not interested in...
without even opening the email message. Can you get rid of 25? 50? 100?
5) Get in touch with someone. After receiving so many holiday newsletters
this past Christmas, I received a few that filled me in on news that I felt I
wanted to respond to...one from a friend contained information about an ill
family member, and another friend's letter had information about a very
successful venture her son was involved in. I wanted to write to both of those
friends...and I did. I handwrote the letters and mailed them. You can go this
route as well, or send them an email or call, to let them know you care.
'Are you ready?' Klaus asked finally.
'No,' Sunny answered.
'Me neither,' Violet said, 'but if we wait until we're ready, we'll be waiting
for the rest of our lives. Let's go.'
