  Fabulous Reader Tip

Organized for Traveling in Style

I travel a lot, and like to have a variety of earrings, rings, and bracelets with me...not my good stuff. Just my costume jewelry choices. Anyway, in the past, I've tossed what I wanted into a plastic bag, and that worked, except it was a bit cumbersome to find what I wanted in the bag of jewelry.

Then, in my junk drawer (I'm embarrassed to say I have a junk drawer, and it's filled with junk. I'm working on that!) I found an old pill organizer. I thought to myself that this would be the perfect solution for transporting jewelry on my travels, and keeping it organized.

It works beautifully. Just thought I would share.

A Reader Asks, 'How Do I Organize Through Grief?'

A GON Reader Asks

Do you have any info on organizing through grief? My husband passed away and I had to move at the same time. Everyone tells me one box at a time. But I'm lucky if I can do 15 minutes!

--Barbara Crisman

Maria Gracia Responds

First of all, let me say that I am very sorry for your loss. Getting through the loss of a loved one is so difficult on its own, without having to factor a move into the situation as well. You obviously have been through a lot.

Everyone handles grief differently. What works for one person may not work for another. For some people, doing one whole box start to finish is what works for them. That may be what gives them a sense of accomplishment. That may not necessarily be the case for you. When it comes to organizing, if 15 minutes is all that you can do for now then do that 15 minutes and let yourself feel good about the fact that you accomplished that much. Maybe in another week you will be able to go 20 minutes, then 25. Any progress, no matter how gradual, is still progress. Cut yourself a little slack and celebrate your own small victories.

You may also find it helpful to set some goals for yourself. Pick a date on the calendar and strive to have one or two boxes completely sorted and put away by that date. Having a set date to shoot for can be a good motivator when it comes to organizing. At the same time, be on the lookout for any items that you can do without. Keep an empty box to store any items that you find while unpacking that you no longer need or want and then donate those items once the box is full.

Next, I suggest you make lists of what you want to get done. I find that having lists that I can physically cross work off of once I have completed it leaves me with a better sense of accomplishment once the job is done. It also gives me a visual of what I have gotten completed and what I have yet to do. You may not feel like you are making any progress on your organizing, but by keeping lists and then physically crossing things off of that list you may actually be surprised to see that you are accomplishing more than even you had realized.

Finally, consider keeping a short journal of what you accomplish each day. 15 minutes may not seem like a lot of time, but when multiplied by the days in the week, then the weeks in a month, then the months in a year your short window of time will quickly add up. Take a look back at your entries every so often and you will inevitably see the progress that you have made.

Thanks for writing...hope this helps a bit. Hugs.

Maria
