  Fabulous Reader Tip

No More Book Clutter for Me

I had over 3,000 books in my house, a great majority of which I hadn't read. I could not bear to part with ones I hadn't read. My solution for all future books...I bought an eBook reader. Now I do not buy physical books. I have been reading all my physical books as rapidly as possible and have, in one year, donated over 700 of them. Lots more space to come.

GON Reader Letter: An Angel Who Helped Me, and Inspired Me

On TV, they said to make sure you clean the snow off of your car today because if you wait until tomorrow the snow on the car will be all ice. So, I dragged outside, with my walker, to take care of it. While outside, a car passed down my street and then backed up. The passenger got out and offered to finish cleaning off the car.

I was out of breath and in pain, so I let her do so. She said she lives in Pennsylvania and came here to rescue a Guinea pig that someone in another building was trying to find a home for. She said she saw my walker and thought I might need some help.

Her name was Rachael. Unfortunately, we did not exchange last names, so I can't send her a thank you on Facebook, but I did give her a thank you hug. I told her she was like an angel coming to help me like that.

I am telling this story to remind all of us (including myself) that there are really good people out there who are just kindhearted souls who want to help us and are not looking for anything in return...they just have a desire to make the world a little better. Rachael made mine a little better today. I hope everyone is able to experience something like this and be able and inspired to help others along the way too. This experience really brightened my spirit.

A Reader Asks, 'Storage Options for Organizing Stuff Without Stacking'

A GON Reader Asks

I am repurposing my back room into an art studio. Here is my challenge. I am an educator with Loreal Professional, which means I have a lot of products and marketing material, and get more each month. I also teach creative classes, which includes everything from painting to planting and everything in between. So I am sure you can imagine ALLLLL the stuff I have. These things I need access to on a pretty regular basis, plus I like to try a lot of things. I am in need of some options for organizing all of this stuff without stacking it all up!

Maria Gracia Responds

You certainly sound like a busy person. I can understand how you would like to get a handle on all of the supplies and things that you have coming in.

First off, I do want to mention (and I'm mentioning this because I have many friends who own similar businesses), request whatever marketing material you can in 'digital format' rather than paper...and print out only what you need when you need it. Otherwise, it's very easy to get overrun in paper. For whatever material you do get and plan to use in paper form, it's imperative to have a good filing system (in a filing cabinet, with labeled file folders) and an organized system for weeding out material that is not longer up-to-date. This is going to require you to make a list of what files need to be purged, and on what dates.

For your supplies, I suggest getting a cube organizer shelf. These come in various sizes, usually meant to hold six, eight, or nine fabric or wicker baskets. I have several of these and am amazed at how much each of the baskets can actually hold. What I also love about these is that when the baskets are tucked into their cubes, it keeps everything 'invisibly organized.'

Sometimes, the baskets come with little pockets on the outside so you can label what's inside if you like, making it super easy to keep track of where you put things. If they don't, come up with your own labeling system.

Also, because the items are held in the baskets, you can just pull the entire thing out when you need it. You could maybe even designate a certain color bin for work things, a different color for painting supplies, and so on. The top of the cube organizer will also provide an extra shelf in the room that you didn't have before, so it is a win win.

Another option is a storage bench. You can get these in either wood or fabric, depending on which you prefer. I like these because, not only do they provide you with a quick, out of sight place to store items, but they also provide you with an additional place to sit down. This would be good also for the things that may be too big to fit in the smaller cube unit.

Thanks for writing in,

Maria
