What I Do To Save Time, Fuel, and Money When Grocery Shopping
One thing I've done is I've cut back on 'one-item' trips, like going all the way
to the store for a loaf of bread. Doing so wastes time, fuel, and you almost
always buy way more than that one loaf of bread you intended to purchase.
If I run out of bread (or oatmeal, or eggs, etc.), I do without, and plan better
on my next shopping trip. For instance, we no longer run out of bread because I
always keep two frozen loaves in the freezer for emergencies. We no longer run
out of toothpaste, because I always buy two when I shop...and I always put
toothpaste or toilet paper on the list when we've used up our supply of the
first tube or package.
I only make one weekly shopping trip for everything I need. Sometimes, I go
every week and a half if I'm feeling creative with using up what I have in the
pantry and freezer.

GON Reader Letter: New Beginning to My Life
Dear Maria,
What a beautiful article you have sent us! (Where Are You In Your List of
Priorities: February 3rd Issue) I feel that you have clearly elaborated my
life style. Yes, I hope to accomplish so many beautiful tasks like enjoying
nature, having quiet time on our terrace, reading a favorite book, being with
school friends, singing, and dancing someday.
But there is no ME time due to my busy life, instead meeting demands of work,
family, kids, and health issues.
Your article gave me a new beginning to my life. Thank you so much for your
great article about where we are in our list of priorities!
Wishing you a lovely day!

A Reader Asks, 'I Am So Frustrated by Confusing Magazine Renewals'
A GON Reader Asks
I am so frustrated by magazines' continuous service programs. I'm receiving one
published by Hearst, which expires in February 2019 and they're already asking
for my renewal. I don't know if that means that if I renew now, I'll have a new
expiration date of 2020, which I really don't want. Do you know how these
systems work, and is there any way to just have a subscription for one year at a
time? I canceled one of them instead of continuing the way they were demanding.
If I just ignore them, will they cancel my subscription? This seems like it is
all for their convenience, not ours. Thanks for all you do!
Penny K.
Maria Gracia Responds
Dear Penny,
I can understand your frustration. I have found that with many things
(magazines, gym memberships, music subscriptions, etc.) that the signing up
process can sometimes be much easier than the getting out process.
Before the Internet, we signed up for things via snail mail and then paid with a
check. Once your subscription ran out, you didn't receive any more magazines, or
services until you mailed in another check. Now so many things are done online
with a credit card, giving businesses the opportunity to automatically rebill
you for things before you realize it is even happening.
Yes, if the magazine you mentioned ends in 2019, and you renew a year early,
you'd then be renewed with a new 2020 expiration date.
Here are some tips:
1) When you subscribe to a magazine, service, or whatever it may be, immediately
after signing up, ask them if you can do so without an auto-renew. Many
businesses will allow this. At the end of your subscription, you can then decide
if it's something you want to continue beyond the first year. If so, you can
then renew at that time.
2) For every subscription or membership you begin, using a notes app on your
phone (I use Paperless) or a sheet of paper you have filed in your filing
cabinet, indicate the date or month your subscription starts and when it ends,
depending on whether you subscribed for a year, two, etc. This way, when you
begin to get renewal cards, you can determine if you have to renew immediately,
or if you can wait. When you get those early renewal notices, if you don't wish
to renew early, just recycle them until you're ready.
3) Some magazine labels indicate the date your subscription ends. Look for it.
Sometimes it can be a bit hidden. It may read...
401WI00 A JUL 21 0019# 129946-06
Do you see the JUL 21 in there? That means you're paid until July 2021.
It may read...
#NWM0114063001/9#76 14AUG19 N1 R
Do you see it? This indicates you're paid until August 2019.
It may read...
#6AC0611A095 1#750328 4Y AP1 20
This one's a big more obscure, but it means you're paid up until April 2020.
Sometimes the subscription label is on the plastic sleeve your magazine gets
mailed in. If this is the case, look on the label and use a pen to write the
renewal date on the back of your current issue.
4) If it's a magazine and if you paid by check, if you ignore them, they'll stop
sending your subscription and you generally would not be liable for a bill. To
be on the super-safe-side, if you don't wish to renew, and the renewal is
postage paid, just send the renewal notice back with the words 'please cancel
subscription.' Another option is to call the number for subscription services
inside your magazine to cancel by phone or online.
5) If you paid by credit card, there's a chance you'll be automatically renewed
at the end of your subscription period. So, as a consumer, it's a very good idea
to be organized by keeping good records of your purchases, start dates, and end
dates. Your good record-keeping with this will help you cancel or resubscribe
on your terms.
Hope this helps a bit! Thanks for writing,
Maria Gracia

People are always asking me how they can find more time in their lives...
* I would love to do (you fill in the blank), but there's just not enough time
