How I Keep Clothes Closet Clutter to a Minimum

I discovered an easy way to keep my clothes closet clutter to a minimum. The other day I was in Wal-mart and purchased a 24-pack of natural wood hangers. I then came home, removed everything from my clothes closet and put it all on my bed, and hung the hangers. Now I had a goal...to hang ONLY the tops I loved and wore the very most...and it had to be within that 24 hanger limit.

Whatever was left over after my 24 hangers were filled, (and I no longer wanted to give up something on a hanger with something on my bed) was donated.

My closet is so clean and organized now...I just love it! Plus, now someone else will benefit from clothing that was just hanging there, never being worn.

Note: this applied to tops only...I'm implementing a similar system for bottoms next week.

Hope this tip helps one of your readers, like it helped me.

A Reader Asks, 'How Do I Clean the Kitchen Walls of Grease Before Painting'

A GON Reader Asks

What can I use to really. really, really clean kitchen walls of grease to prepare for painting? And is there a base paint that is needed? Thank you.

Jackie Warner

Maria Gracia Responds

Hi Jackie,

Good question, because you definitely do not want to paint over grease, otherwise, once the new paint is dry, that grease is going to reappear. I'll also warn you that the following is probably going to seem like a big pain and a lot of work. That's because, it is, unfortunately. That being said, following the proper steps will help ensure the best results in the end. Here goes...

There is a degreaser cleaner available called Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner and it works great for this purpose. Spray it on the walls and then scrub to remove grease and other dirt. If you find areas of hardened grease that won't scrub off easily, those areas will need to be scraped off with a putty knife. Then, use the degreaser afterwards.

After that, you're probably going to want to lightly sand your walls with 100- grit sandpaper. Be sure to wipe off any residue, after doing so, with a damp rag. This is also the time to spakle and sand any divets or holes.

As far as primer goes, there's always the age-old question whether or not it is necessary. If you're going from a dark color to a light color, you'll definitely need to use primer first. If the previous coat of paint is glossy, you may need to use primer first as well, as new paint doesn't stick as well to glossy surfaces.

Check with your local paint store and find out what they recommend, which by the way, they almost always recommend you use primer first because it's the safest answer for them...and for you.

When you're ready to paint kitchen walls, I recommend a satin or semi-gloss finish as both are easy to clean.

There's nothing like a freshly painted kitchen...I'm excited for you!
