I Did a Bit of Organizing for My Husband Yesterday
Since I live in an older house, there are not always electrical outlets where
I need them. Therefore, I'm forever asking my husband for extension cords, and
he's always asking me what length i need. Then he would go into his huge box
of extension cords, searching for the right one to fish out for me, which would
involve quite a bit of unraveling.
So yesterday, I organized all of his extension cords into empty, cardboard
toilet paper and paper towel tubes...I've had it in my mind that I was going to
organize his cords for quite some time, so I've been saving the cardboard rolls.
I even labeled each one with the cord length.
He was impressed...he even took me out for pizza! And that's saying a lot for my
husband...because we rarely eat out!

A Reader Asks, 'How Can I Be Better Organized for Tax Season?'
A GON Reader Asks
Maria,
I just discovered you, your web site, and your fabulous newsletter. Wow...I've
been missing out all of these years. I'm so glad I found you. Unfortunately,
for my accountant, I didn't find you soon enough. Once again, I'm going to my
tax appointment, tomorrow, with a shoe box full of disorganized receipts, tax
forms I've received, and last year's tax records. It always costs me more to
get my taxes prepared because it takes hours for my accountant to sort through
my tax stuff.
What can I do from this point on to be more organized for tax season next
year? I swore to my accountant that I'd arrive organized next April!
Thanks a bunch,
April L., Boise, ID
Maria Gracia Responds
Hi April,
Thanks so much for your note...I'm happy to help out. Here are some tips for
you:
1. Get yourself a portable file box...the type that holds hanging file
folders. Get some hanging file folders as well...and some manila file folders.
2. All paperwork you need for taxes goes in this box, sorted into one of
the manila folders. Just use the hanging file folders to hold the manila file
folders in place.
According to the National Society of Accountants, here's what you'll need to
bring to your tax appointment, and it should all be sorted by category into
labeled file folders:
a. Identification Information: Social Security numbers for each member of
your family, as well as their full names and dates of birth. Have this
information all typed up and ready to hand over. Bring a second form of ID as
well, like a driver's license, military ID, or any state-issued picture ID card.
b. Copy of Last Year's Tax Return
c. Wage Statements: W-2s (if anyone in your family is an independent
contractor and/or freelancer, those family members will need to obtain Form
1099-MISC from each client worked with throughout the year.
d. Additional Income Statements: This includes any other income any
family member has accrued, like interest and dividend income from investments,
unemployment income, or social security income. Bring all of these statements.
e. Real Estate Documents: Bring any documents pertaining to a recent home
purchase, proof of paid mortgage or home equity loan interest, or proof of paid
real estate and personal property taxes paid.
f. Proof of Expenses: If you want to ensure you get your deductions and
credits, be sure to prove your expenses, like receipts, invoices, medical bills,
charitable contributions, IRA contributions, job-hunting expenses, mileage logs,
education expenses, self-employment expenses, and more. It's better to bring too
much documentation than too little.
3. As you make purchases that are tax-deductible, immediately put the
receipts into your tax box.
4. As you receive tax documents (generally in January), immediately put those
in your tax box.
5. As soon as you file your taxes this year, put a copy of that return in
your tax box.
You get the idea...don't wait until next year's tax deadline to get your stuff
together. Work on it throughout the whole year. Whenever you get something your
accountant will need, file it in the tax box.
When your appointment date rolls around, bring the entire box to your
accountant. When your taxes are done, remove everything from the box and file
that paperwork in a cardboard banker's box labeled with the appropriate tax
year. Store it in a dry, out-of-the-way place. Then, start your box over again
for the new year.
Hope this helps!
