Lessons You Can Learn From Letting Go
We are always told to hold on to that which we hold dear. Keeping loved ones
close, continuing with hobbies that make us happy, or working at a job that we
love would all fit into that category. Holding on to these things can lead to
greater contentment and overall happiness. But not much is ever said about
letting go of things that have the opposite effect and the lessons that can be
learned.
Catherine, a dear friend of mine, made a bunch of new year's resolutions back in
January that she shared with me. After all, it's easier to keep a promise to
yourself when you make yourself accountable to others.
It was at that point that she made a decision. Not only was she going to begin
doing the things that would improve her life, but she was going to STOP doing
the things that were making her unhappy. I applauded this resolution. After all,
we only get one life on this earth. Still, I knew that letting go of things,
even the things that don't make us happy, can be more difficult than it sounds.
Catherine's first test came when Chrystal, a long-time friend of hers, called
one afternoon. She'd known Chrystal for years and although they didn't see each
other that often, they still got together on occasion to catch up on life. When
Catherine met Chrystal for coffee one morning, it all came back. They spent the
entire time talking about Chrystal's job and Chrystal's kids and Chrystal's
problems. Catherine never got the chance to fill her in on what Catherine had
going on.
She called me that afternoon, and I gently reminded her of her New Year's
Resolution.
It was at that moment that Catherine had an epiphany. She realized that Chrystal
called only when Chrystal needed to vent and really wasn't interested in hearing
anything about Catherine. This was a one-sided friendship. From Catherine's
viewpoint, Chrystal always left these get-togethers feeling energized and
lighter. Catherine left feeling weighed-down and unimportant.
Friendships, or any relationship for that matter, are meant to be two-sided. You
should get out, what you put in. If you are constantly the only person putting
in ALL of the effort, it may be time to a) see if you two can come to a
resolution that serves you both or b) sever ties.
Not all friendships are meant to be. In Catherine's case, after several heart-
to-heart conversations with Chrystal and giving the coffee dates another few
tries, she decided this relationship would will still be cordial, but that she
would not allocate any more emotional or scheduled time to this friend.
This may sound sad, but now both Catherine AND Chrystal have the opportunity
to make new friends that may suit each other's personalities and needs in a
more productive, happier manner.
As another example, Jamie, another friend of mine, divorced a few years back. I
am still amazed at how bitter she still is. She is dating someone else, but
continues complaining about her ex. What she's complaining about is not relevant
to now. All her complaints reach back into the past. There is a Don Henley song
that says, 'If you keep carrying that anger, it will eat you up inside.' This
seems to be the case with her. Holding on to past hurts and anger only affects
yourself and really serves no purpose.
Anytime I talk with her, I remind myself to let go of things. People hurt each
other for one reason or another. But, clinging to that only takes away from the
good going on in your life. My philosophy is, accept the past, acknowledge it,
and then move on to better things. Don't let the negatives from the past take
over the positives of the present.
It is okay to let things go sometimes, especially if those things are doing you
more harm than good. Do the things that make you happy and stop doing the things
that don't. We only get so many trips around the sun. Make sure you are spending
that time well.

Theme of the Week: Our theme of the week is 'vision' and my home page
quotes reflect that.
getorganizednow.com
Week Beginning March 31
1) Clean up plant beds and/or service the lawn mower. My family has tons
of work to do this spring, and that's going to have to happen on the first April
weekend day that is warm and dry enough to be outside. So, we're geared up and
ready to cut back perennials this week. This may be a good week for you to do
the same. If the weather does not cooperate, start getting your lawnmower ready.
Either get it serviced, or prep it yourself (changing out the oil, checking the
blades, etc.)
2) Fix window screens. I know this is not a fun job, but torn window
screens need to be repaired or replaced. Handle this task this week if you can
do it yourself or call a local handyman in your neighborhood for assistance. You
should replace the screen if the tear is too big, if there are many tears, or
if the frame is damaged.
3) Launder curtains. If your curtains are machine-washable and unlined,
now is a good time to launder them. If your curtains are lined, even if they
'say' machine-washable, the seams could shrink in water. If in doubt, opt for
dry cleaning. For board-mounted valances, a vacuum cleaner is the best tool to
'clean' any accumulated dust off the drapery material.
'Some of us think holding on makes us strong; but sometimes it is letting go.'
