Are You a Digital Hoarder?

You've decluttered your closets, cupboards and file cabinets, and gotten rid of the piles of stuff on the dining room table. Because your home looks tidier and more spacious, you may not think of yourself as being a hoarder. But all clutter is not created equal. Some of it is virtually invisible...until you turn on your computer, your phone or your tablet.

Here are five signs you might be a digital hoarder and an ACTION you can take for each to help you gain control:

1. Your email inbox contains 18,469 messages, some read, some unread.

ACTION:
Delete as many as you can, by simply skimming the subject lines. This should greatly deplete the volume...hopefully by 75% or more. As you read each remaining email, ask yourself: 'Do I need to act on this?' If YES, respond immediately. Then, delete the original message or move to a categorized folder, only if absolutely necessary, for future reference. If you can't respond to it immediately (because it's going to take some time and thought), flag it and respond during a scheduled time period this week. If you do NOT have to act on it, ask yourself, 'Do I need to keep this?' At that point, either delete or move to the appropriate folder. Finally, designate a set time each week to deal with the backlog until you reach 'ground zero.'

2. You've never deleted a single document. You've saved 10 drafts of the story you've been writing, each with a different and confusing name. You don't even recognize many of the names of your documents and aren't sure what they contain.

ACTION:
Develop a system for naming your documents and folders. Be specific. Naming something 'document1.doc' is not a good system because you can't tell what's the file contains by the file name. Some possibilities:
annual-report-jan-18.doc
griffin-emily.doc
summer-convention-scheduled-events-updated-mar18.xls

Set a time each day to open and delete at least 10 of your outdated or irrelevant documents, until you're sure that every document on your computer is relevant and current. Also, rename the ones that have cryptic or 'too general' file names.

3. Every text you've ever received or sent is still taking up valuable space on your phone.

ACTION:
Most texts can be deleted at the end of each day. Do this each day, at a scheduled time. It should only take a few moments if you keep up with it.

4.You don't have time to read an article on Facebook, so you save it to your 'Reading List.' This list is now 567 articles long.

ACTION:
Either read articles of interest right away or set aside 30 minutes to an hour each week to read your saved articles. If you don't get to them, delete them...because new ones are going to be popping up each day and most people way-overestimate how much they can read in a lifetime.

5. You took pictures of every second of your children's lives and have never deleted one. They all have names like PL1200080 and it takes you a week to locate the one you want. There are even photos of people you no longer recognize.

ACTION:
If you take lots of photos, it's important you schedule time to deal with them every day or week. Upload them to your computer, whether they're on your camera or smart phone. Be relentless and delete the blurry photos, the mediocre ones, and duplicates. Keep only the best shots. Name and organize the rest using the photo management app of your choice. I use SmugMug because this service makes it easy to share my photos with family, and backs all my photos up as well online. I also back-up my photos myself, keeping them on an external drive...because losing my photos would be detrimental to me. Once you've done this, delete the photos from your camera and/or phone. This may sound time-consuming. It is. But it's less time-consuming than digging through thousands of photos every time you want one. Plus, having organized photos is much nicer for memory- keeping... yours and generations to follow.

Digital clutter is much like real clutter in that it makes things that you need much harder to find. It's no accident that, in the technical world, getting rid of clutter is called 'housekeeping.' Like hoarding of stuff, even though you don't see it every day, it's still cluttering up your devices, as well as causing mental stress. So, just like you clean out your closets, so too is it necessary to clean out your devices.

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning March 24

1) Clean under your kitchen sink. Empty the entire space. Vacuum out debris and scrub it clean. Get rid of anything you no longer need, like the flower food packets you tossed in there years ago (trash 'em), the overload of vases (donate them!), and the containers of bubbles you're not sure where to store (it's spring...send the kids/grandkids outside to use them up!) Contain like-items in plastic basins before returning them, neatly, to this space.

2) Clean under something big. Spring is the perfect time to handle those cleaning jobs you don't tackle often enough, like the crumbs under your oven, the debris under the fridge, or the dust bunnies under your bed. Get help to move these large items if you can't do so yourself...and get one or more of these 'under' areas cleaned up.

3) Swap out winter tools for spring tools. Swap shovels, snow blowers, and bags of salt for gardening tools, potting soil, and the lawn mower. Move the out-of-season items to a harder-to-reach area of your garage or shed, and bring the spring items forward so they're super-easy to access.

  In Closing

'Spring won't let me stay in this house any longer! I must get out and breathe the air deeply again.'

--Gustav Mahler
