Quick Fixes for a More Organized Life

Looking in the mirror this morning, I noticed a few stray gray hairs (my friend, Jo, calls them sparkles!)...and my next salon appointment is not for two weeks. So, I sprayed on a bit of my root touch-up. Good as new...in seconds. Let's face it. We're all busy and we all need some quick fixes in our lives now and then.

Here are five of my favorite quick fixes for a more organized life:

1) Stinky garbage disposal: When your sink is smelling a bit unpleasant, it's probably due to your garbage disposal. To dislodge the gunk from the blades, drop a cup of ice in it, turn on the cold water, and run the disposal. When the ice is broken up, with the garbage disposal still on and the water still running, dump in a cup of baking soda, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Finally, turn on the hot water, continue to run the disposal, and drop a cut-up piece of citrus fruit into it (lemon, lime, or orange). Turn off the water and the disposal, and you should now have a fresh smelling sink, in 5 minutes or so.

2) Keep your lipstick from feathering. Whenever I want to give myself a quick beauty fixer-upper, I apply a fresh coat of lipstick. But the last thing I want my lipstick to do is feather (feathering is when lipstick bleeds beyond your lips and looks uneven), because this is somewhat of a beauty disaster. To avoid this, always use lip primer on your lips and a nude lip pencil to line your lips. Taking a minute to apply both before your lipstick, should hold your lipstick in place beautifully.

3) Fingerprints on stainless steel. If you want your kitchen or bathroom looking clean in a hurry, be sure your stainless steel faucets are buffed, and fingerprint-free. Use a disinfectant wipe (I like Clorox wipes) to wipe clean and remove any debris, left-behind toothpaste, and germs. Next spray window cleaner (Windex) on the surface and buff until it shines. (If the surface was already pretty clean to begin with, you can dry-buff with a microfiber cloth, just to remove fingerprints.) By the way, if you apply a very gentle car wax over a stainless steel finish, you can actually keep it fingerprint-free for days until you're ready for your regular cleaning.

4) Get onion smells off your hands and stop crying. If you cook a lot, like I do, chopping onions comes with the territory. If my eyes begin to tear, I stop chopping for a few seconds and swipe my hands over my stainless steel kitchen faucet. This almost always stops the 'onion crying' for me. When I'm done chopping, I wash my hands with cold water, and swipe them over the stainless steel faucet again to remove onion odors from my hands.

5) Oh no, pink underwear! So, you're done washing and are ready to transfer your white clothes to the dryer, but to your dismay, your once-white clothes are now all pink...and then you find that rogue red sock. Sigh. Whatever you do, DON'T put the newly-pink-dyed clothes in the dryer, which may set that color forever. Instead, remove any clothing not affected from the cycle. You're going to have to re-wash those pink clothes with Oxygen bleach (like Oxi-clean) in addition to your regular detergent. Just follow the directions on the container to determine the amount. Hopefully, when the cycle is done, your whites will be white again. (If the clothes are still pink, you may have to soak them in your bathtub with oxygen bleach and water for 8 hours. This is not a quick-fix, but soaking them doesn't really require any work on your part. After the 8 hours, wash again.)

By the way, these quick fixes not only make life easier...but they make life better!

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning April 7th

1) Make the seasonal clothing switch. If you have a closet that's large enough, move your out-of-season clothes towards the back of the closet, and your spring clothing forward. If you have a smaller closet and can't keep all-seasons of clothing in it, bag or box up seasonal clothing and move those to a dry storage area, and replace those with your warmer weather attire.

2) Inventory your spring/summer footwear. If your footwear is in good condition, be sure each pair is clean and ready to be worn. Add anything you might need to your shopping list (I can use a new pair of white sandals this year. I'll be looking for them on my next shopping trip.) It's also a good time to schedule a pedicure (or do one at home) so your feet look great in your open-toe and/or open-heeled shoes.

3) Rake the lawn. Get outside and rake your lawn this week to remove any leaves and other debris leftover from last season, and also to get rid of excessive thatch. Use a plastic rake, and rake gently...being careful not to damage any new growth.
