Having Trouble Letting Go of Your Stuff?
Have you noticed that stuff has a way of multiplying without us even realizing
it? Whether we're talking about a junk drawer, under a bed, or a coat closet,
stuff has a way of sticking around, even if you've decided you don't want it
anymore. We all have collections that we don't even realize have accumulated
until someone else mentions it...or sometimes it takes us getting to the
point-of-no-return. So, how do we let go of the stuff that is now cluttering
floors, shelves, closets, cabinets, and rooms? Let's look at some stuff that may
be filling up your home and hints to help you let go of it.
Hint One: Look Down
Some stuff just tends to accumulate...hangers, vases, hotel-size toiletries,
lotions, makeup, Tupperware, glasses, sheets, candles, and towels are just a few
of the common items. Because this list probably won't hold too much emotional
connection, it's an easy way to start letting go. Saying goodbye to clutter
begins by simply taking a breath and getting to work. Focus on one small space
at a time and begin letting go. If you haven't used it, or find it overwhelming
or causing clutter, throw it away or donate it.
Hint Two: Look Around
Sometimes, there may be things that we don't let go of, without even being
conscious of the decision we are making. When you look around your home, you'll
probably find office supplies, books, magazines, toys, kitchen gadgets, and
other items that you haven't gotten rid of, simply because you just have too
much. That causes a feeling of overwhelm. Set some permissions for yourself. For
example, allow yourself to keep five pens in your desk drawer, three magazines
on your coffee table, and organize one space for extra school supplies. If you
are able to look at what you can keep, instead of what you need to let go of,
you'll be much more successful at letting go.
Hint Three: Look Within
When you saw the title of this article, you may have immediately thought of an
object or two that you emotionally fight with to let go...maybe a gift from a
good friend that you really don't like or a large piece of furniture you
inherited, but that doesn't fit in your home. To help you let go of items like
these, look within. Why is it so difficult to let go? Before you know why,
you'll probably have a difficult time parting with that thing that nags at you.
Consider the reasons you can't separate from stuff emotionally. Sentimentality?
Guilt? If something was given to you, it is yours...to keep or not to keep.
Hint Four: Look Up
When you struggle to let go of stuff because it is emotionally 'a downer,' I
encourage you to look up at the situation, and the stuff. To take the initial
step of breaking the emotional tie, literally walk through your house and look
for the clutter (unused or unwanted stuff.) Create a list and/or, if you are
able to, collect that stuff and put it in a designated box or a space (that
isn't visible to your everyday living). Set a deadline for yourself and revisit
the content then. Decide if it can be donated, repurposed, thrown out, or given
away. If you just can't let go, don't be hard on yourself. There is probably
good reason, so look up! Just set another deadline, and in the meantime get rid
of something else less important.
If you are having trouble getting started and letting go, try these hints.
Something doesn't have to be sentimental to make you feel overwhelmed,
cluttered, guilty, or frustrated, although sentimental items probably will cause
guilt, so be conscious of what may be causing your emotions to be on high alert.
Give yourself permission to acknowledge your emotions and why you have them.
Look around. Then, start doing something about it. Your home and life will be
greatly rewarded. Most important, you'll own your stuff and it won't own you!

All people have clutter to some degree.
You may have a little bit of clutter sitting around--things that aren't really
serving any purpose, taking up unnecessary space, gathering dust, and causing a
bit of frustration.
Or perhaps you have LOADS of clutter and it's causing your life to be turned
upside down--you can't find things easily, you feel like your home is bursting
at the seams with STUFF, you have to climb over piles and boxes to get to
anything, and you feel overwhelmed and frustrated.
MOST people are somewhere right in the middle of these two situations.
For anyone who just has a little bit of clutter, have no doubt in your mind that
CLUTTER GROWS, and small challenges soon turn into large issues.
BUT, here's something NEW I discovered...
Clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may have in

Clutter actually invades your life in FOUR forms...
1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
3. Digital Clutter
4. Emotional Clutter
And once it's there, it begins to wreak all sorts of havoc...

Week Beginning April 21
1) Give our planet some love. April 22nd is Earth Day. Do something nice
for the planet. Perhaps invest in a reusable coffee cup, use earth-friendly
products, plant something, or bring your own reusable grocery bags when you go
shopping.
2) Make plans with someone. Is there someone you care about that you've
been putting off because you're too busy. Make that person a priority in your
life this week.
3) Check tire pressure and fill up. Check the tire pressure in your
vehicle's tires...and in your bicycle tires as well. Fill up with air if
necessary. By the way, if the weather cooperates, enjoy a bike ride this week.
