How Long Has That Been in the Fridge?

I am pretty good about keeping my refrigerator cleaned out, ever since I cleaned it out thoroughly and realized some of those fancy mustards and jellies had been opened and sitting in there for as long as 3 years!

Now, whenever I open a new jelly or mayo bottle or anything, I use a black marker and put the month and year where it is quick and easy to see. Time goes by fast in my world and I am still amazed how quickly things grow old--including myself!

Be Inspired with One Simple Word

I took on a challenge last year, suggested by a day-by-day calendar, in which I would choose a word to live by, inspire, and remind me throughout the year. The word I chose was simple: DO. This one tiny word has served me well in getting things done!

We Just Wanted to Say Thank You!

Dear Maria,

I love every newsletter you send out. One recent one really spoke to me (and my husband) on SO many levels. Your title was, 'Too Good To Throw Out.' We both seem to be information junkies. A couple of months ago, I was experiencing another one of those nights where I wake up at 3am and can't get back to sleep. I decided to go through some of my saved up 'read later' articles. Several articles were on parenting toddlers and teens. My children are almost 30! Needless to say those articles went in the recycling container!

You also wrote an article on, 'How to apologize' and included a quote from R. Brault. We recently were hit with some very hurtful words, spoken publicly during an annual meeting by a person in our church family. For healing to begin, we feel we need to make the move to apologize and ask the question 'how can we make this right?' We know we will not get an apology from the other person, but prayerfully an understanding can be reached.

Another article you wrote on respecting time was a biggie for both of us as well. Why do some people think your time isn't as important as theirs? Your recent article on meetings was another gem.

We just wanted to say thank you!

Blessings,
Nancy Johnson

A Reader Asks, 'How Do You Store and Use Up Bulk Dried Goods?'

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I buy food staples in bulk from Costco. After filling coffee, pasta, etc. to the appropriate canisters, the opened hefty bags still remain and they are giving me frustration as I feel I have double physical objects, canister and bag. When the items are freezer friendly, I freeze them immediately after my shopping trip. So mainly, dry ingredients and bags of snacks are my headache.

My question is: How do you manage the half-opened bags of food? From which should I start to use firstly, the canister or bag? Or, if storage is my problem, should I stop buying in bulk? I can eat them up within the recommended period and I like Costco.

PS. I can stock up and use nicely if they are household items like washing detergents or wipes.

Maria Gracia Responds

Akemi, I agree with you. Although I'm not a fan of grocery shopping, doing so at Costco can actually be a fun event. My daughter and I enjoy strolling around...she loves all the free samples! To be honest with you, I do too!

When I buy dried goods in bulk, I transfer a portion of it to a smaller container for my pantry. The rest (the much bigger container) is stored in a separate, cool, dry storage area in my house. We then use whatever is in the small day-to-day container until it's empty (or nearly empty) and then refill from the bigger bag/container in storage.

That being said, I don't buy in bulk very often. It would have to be an extremely discounted price for me to go through the bother. For instance, I recently purchased a large can of olive oil, that I keep transferring to a smaller bottle as needed. It's just 'another thing to do,' but, I saved a ton of money so it's worth the additional TO DO on my task list.

That being said, I wouldn't buy in bulk to save just a couple of dollars. You have to weigh the price savings versus the extra time and storage needed.

So, I guess what it comes down to is, if you're saving a good amount of money, and using up what you buy before it goes stale, the additional time it may take you to keep replenishing a smaller container from a bigger container or box may be worth it IF you have a good amount of storage space. If you really don't have the extra storage space, don't buy in bulk.

I hope those suggestions help you!

Maria
