Get Those Dreaded, But Necessary, Tasks Done!

Are there certain tasks around your house that you dread, but you know are necessary? What are those tasks? How do you get them checked off your list?

There is something to be said about the concept of Just Do It or JDI. You can do anything for 5 to 15 minutes. You would be surprised what you can manage to accomplish in such a short period of time. Often these dreaded tasks, such as unloading the dishwasher or scrubbing the toilet, are ones we can complete quickly. Try timing yourself the next time and you might realize that it won't take you nearly as long as you thought to complete these chores. Use your idle time to accomplish quick actions. You can wipe the kitchen counters while waiting for the water to boil for tea.

Try setting up a timer. Make it into a 'beat the clock' game where you try to race to the finish before the timer goes off.

Another way to make sure you get some of these tasks completed is to challenge yourself to get a dreadful job done during commercial breaks throughout your favorite TV show. If you DVR everything, allow yourself to multi-task by folding a load of laundry while watching TV.

Make the tasks as pleasant as possible by setting the mood to inspire you to be productive. I suggest turning on music, lighting a candle, even opening a window. Fresh air in your house can help make these everyday jobs seem much more enjoyable.

Remember you don't need to get everything done yourself. Allow other people in your household to help. Learning to delegate is an important skill. Maybe it's worth giving your teenager a few dollars to mow the lawn or paying the dry cleaner to press your work clothes.

Another method for setting yourself up for success is to create your TO DO list with all your household chores first and then add in some fun activities to do afterwards...such as a picnic in the park or a hike in the woods. Or alternate one not-so-pleasant TO DO and then one more pleasant one afterwards until your entire TO DO list is completed.

I am partial to the reward system. If I complete all the necessary tasks then I get a small and simple reward, such as a cup of tea, time to read a book or magazine, a bubble bath, or a manicure.

Let technology work for you, such as using a robotic vacuum, automating bill paying, ordering groceries online, or using the phone to set up your refills for your prescriptions.

Complete tasks in batches. Set up one day for batch cooking for the week or cook an extra meal to pop into the freezer for next week.

I love the mantra 'don't sweat the small stuff.' Don't worry about every single little task being complete all the time. Turn off your inner perfectionist. That being said, it is possible to complete many of the necessary, but dreadful, tasks around the house...quickly...if you put some of these tips into action.

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning May 5th

1) Get Your Mother's Day Cards/Gifts Finalized. Mother's Day is coming up on Sunday, May 13th. Time to mail out cards and/or gifts, or make special plans with your mom, grandma, wife...and any special moms in your life. If any of those special women have passed on, do something nice in memory of them.

2) Throw something away. Yes, I'm all about donating and repurposing, but there are some things in our lives that are just not worth keeping, and aren't good enough to pass on or refurbish. Get rid of something that matches this description this week so it's not taking up unnecessary space in your life.

3) Dust off your bookcases and bookshelves. A few times a year, I like to remove books from bookcases and shelves and dust them really well. Before I return them to the shelves, I first decide, one by one, if I want to keep that title. If I don't, I donate those to my local library. If I do, before I return the books back to the shelves, I dust those off too.
