How I Keep Fresh Herbs Fresh

I'm not a fan of limp herbs. To keep mine fresh, I treat them carefully and delicately...similar to the way I treat a flower.

1. I don't rinse them until I'm ready to use them.

2. Directly after I buy them and bring them home, I trim the ends of the stems and put them in a glass of water.

3. I cover the herbs loosely with a plastic bag, and store in the refrigerator... except for basil (that herb is stored on the counter at room temperature.)

4. If the water starts to discolor, I change the water.

Herbs such as fresh parsley, cilantro, basil, and other fresh herbs can last up to two weeks or longer when stored this way!

A Reader Asks, 'My son and his wife are moving in. Where do I start to create empty space?'

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

Thanks for your e-mails! My son and his wife are going to be moving into our house for a while. I need to create empty space for their use and have no idea where to start. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Sue M., Concord, NH

Maria Gracia Responds

Hi Sue,

I'm happy to share some ideas for welcoming your son and his wife to live in your home. How very thoughtful of you to help them out.

Your very first step is going to be to determine their sleeping quarters. For instance, perhaps you have a guest room, space in a finished basement, or the possibility of converting a room currently used for something else (like a den) into a bedroom. Once you know this, you can begin preparing this area. I would start by emptying everything out of this room, little by little, finding new homes for those belongings. The only items that should stay are a bed that will work for both of them, and any bedroom furniture that may already be there. Everything else should be relocated to another room.

Now, if you have a lot of possessions, it would be an excellent idea for you to donate everything you don't need. So, not only will you be welcoming in your son and daughter-in-law, but you'll also be emptying your home of any unnecessary clutter at the same time.

You may have to think outside of the box a bit if you are removing large pieces of furniture from their sleeping quarters. For instance, maybe a desk may have to be temporarily moved into your living room or crafting room. Maybe a computer and its components may have to be moved into your master bedroom.

Some items may have to be temporarily stored in your basement or attic.

Once the room is as empty as it's going to be, I would leave the 'decorating' up to them. In doing so, it will give them a sense of ownership and belonging.

If you have at least two bathrooms in your home with showers, you can probably designate one for their use. In this case, same idea. Empty the bathroom of anything they won't be using, but you can retain toiletries they may use. Have them go through whatever you have in there, and give you anything they won't use so you can use it in your bathroom.

Other than that, that's as far as I would go. The rest of your house should be exactly as you like it to be.

Of course, I would also work with them on establishing some boundaries as needed and perhaps (not knowing their situation) having them pay some 'rent' (so to speak). Your grocery bills and water bill will be increasing, so anything they can do to help out will allow them to share the responsibilities. If that's not possible, perhaps putting everyone in charge of household chores will be in order. Also, be sure you begin with an open line of communication between all of you to help ensure a happy, healthy, enjoyable stay.

I hope this helps you get started!

Maria
