It's 'Goodbye Clutter' Week at Get Organized Now!

Goodbye Physical Clutter

Our focus is on getting rid of clutter this week. Today, we're working on physical clutter. You know...the stuff piled up in your home or office that you don't use and/or love.

Here are five 'goodbye clutter' tips for the day...

1) Pretend you're moving. If you had to move today, what would you take with you? If clutter is getting out of hand in your house, place a moving box (or two or three) in each room. Pack everything up, except for the furniture. Yes, make the room fairly bare. Then, as you need things, remove them from the box and put them back into the room in their appropriate homes. Whatever remains in the box(es) by the end of a two-week period is a candidate for never leaving the box, and instead being donated or trashed.

2) Toss/Donate 10 a Day. Make a vow, every single day, to get rid of anything you no longer use or love. Be sure you have an empty bag or box you can fill each day.

3) Cut back on holiday decor. Holiday decor can easily take up a ton of space, and is only used during 'pieces' of the calendar year. Limit yourself to one box per holiday...maybe two for Christmas. I can actually combine some holidays in one box. For instance, I have both Valentine's Day decor and Easter decor together in one labeled box. Donate whatever exceeds your declared box limit.

4) Avoid shopping as an activity. Avoid shopping, unless you truly need something in particular. Going shopping with family and friends generally ends up in physical stuff you don't really need to survive. Want something to do? Head to the movies, or the park, or the ball game, or the beach. These types of events generate memories...not clutter.

5) Make getting rid of clutter a family affair. Designate your own 'Clutter Week' at your home. Each family member is responsible for filling a large box or bag with items he/she no longer needs/wants. At the end of the week, fill the car with everyone's donations and head to your local charity. Do something to celebrate afterwards!

All people have clutter to some degree.

You may have a little bit of clutter sitting around--things that aren't really serving any purpose, taking up unnecessary space, gathering dust, and causing a bit of frustration.

Or perhaps you have LOADS of clutter and it's causing your life to be turned upside down--you can't find things easily, you feel like your home is bursting at the seams with STUFF, you have to climb over piles and boxes to get to anything, and you feel overwhelmed and frustrated.

MOST people are somewhere right in the middle of these two situations.

For anyone who just has a little bit of clutter, have no doubt in your mind that CLUTTER GROWS, and small challenges soon turn into large issues.

BUT, here's something NEW I discovered...

Clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may have in your closet, the overload of toys in the toy room, the boxes of stuff in the basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home.

Clutter actually invades your life in FOUR forms...

1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
3. Digital Clutter
4. Emotional Clutter

And once it's there, it begins to wreak all sorts of havoc...
