Handy Holding Areas...Just in Case

Coupons, discount offers, and receipts...do you find these cluttering your email inbox? Most folks would say YES. The problem, you may say, is 'I might need or want them.' Most likely, you won't, but doesn't it sometimes seem to be inevitable that as soon as you delete that coupon for 20% off from Barnes and Noble, someone in your family will say, 'Hey, I found a book I want to order. Do you have any coupons I can use?'

All sorts of messages land in my email inbox every day, things I more than likely will not need, and I hate having them clutter my inbox. Most coupons and discount offers are time sensitive. Many receipts need to be kept, but only for a very short period...generally until you've worn the item, consumed the food, or at least verified the charge on your online credit card transactions.

Here's what I do...

1) Coupons and Discount Offers: For email messages I receive that include a coupon code, I have a folder in my email program (I use Outlook) called COUPONS. If there is even a slight chance that I, or someone in my family, may purchase something from that company before the deadline, I drag the email into that folder. Before anyone purchases anything, we check the folder first. Every time I'm in that folder, I take a quick peek and delete any expired offers.

2) General Shopping Receipts: I also have a folder in Outlook called SHOPPING. Whenever I order something online (toner cartridges for my printer, clothing, books, etc.), I drag the email order receipt into that folder. Then, every time I'm in that folder, I have a peek and delete anything no longer needed. Once I determine the item is listed on my credit card transactions correctly...and I'm sure I won't be returning the item...it gets deleted. The only exception to this is if it's an occasional, more expensive purchase for an item with a warranty. In that case, I'll pull the receipt into a WARRANTY RECEIPTS folder...and keep it in there until the warranty expires.

If you need to find something in one of the folders, it is pretty easy. Different email applications work differently of course. If you are using the Gmail app, and want to find a coupon from Barnes and Nobel, for example, simply go into the search area while you are in the Coupons or Shopping folder. If you look, you will see a little triangle in the search bar that reveals a menu for searching. You can search by sender, date, attachments, etc. Yahoo mail works similarly. If you are using the Apple mail app on your computer, you can do the same. A pull-down menu is located at the top of the email list column allowing you to sort by 'from,' 'date,' etc.

Of course, like mail sent to the trash or recycle bin, it is very easy for email to pile up in either of these folders, because as we all know, 'Out of sight, out of mind.' This is why I check these folders anytime I drag something new into them. Alternately, you can schedule a date on your calendar (once per month, let's say) to empty the contents. Arrange the emails so they are sorted by date, and then delete the oldest ones.

Hopefully this idea for 'handy holding areas' helps to remove clutter from your inbox, but can still be easily found if the need arises.

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning June 16th

1) Schedule a medical appointment. Has it been awhile since your last physical, dental appointment, eye exam, mammogram, colonoscopy, or another necessary medical appointment? Make it a point to set your next appointment.

2) Clean any artificial garlands or plants. In my house, we have a lot of artificial greenery on our armoires, upper kitchen cabinets, and bookcases. This past week, we removed one at a time, brought the greenery out back, and hosed it off (be sure the type you have can be rinsed with water...otherwise, you'll have to dry- dust it.) We then allowed it to dry in the fresh air. Before we returned each to its home, we thoroughly removed the dust from the furniture/cabinets. The reason we did these one at a time was because it was then easier to know what greenery went where. So, we did the armoire first...and then when the greenery was back in place, we did the bookcase garland, etc.

3) Rearrange something. One way to give your home a fresh look, without the expense, is to rearrange the furnishings/decor in the room, or switch the decor from one room to another. Rearrange something this week and enjoy the new view.
