Keep This Fresh in the Freezer
To keep it fresh, I store bread in the freezer. It thaws in two minutes. If you
want to toast it, a slice can go straight into the toaster. Even if you don't
use much bread or rolls, you can keep several kinds on hand for variety. Stock
up when bread goes on sale, or if you bake your own. Make several loaves at once
to save time. Just slice before freezing, because cutting frozen bread creates a
shower of crumbs!

Thanks for all the great advice!
Hi Maria,
Thanks for all the great advice. I read your articles and do the items on your
TO DO list as I can.
I have a busy house with one son moving to a new house and staying with us while
he works during the transition. His dog is staying while his house is for sale.
My other son and his two boys live with my husband and I all the time.
My dad has been with us for 16 years on July 1st. Mom was with us too, but died
9 years ago.
I have to designate some of the housework and cooking chores. Dad is ill and I
am taking him and my husband back and forth to the doctor's office a lot now.
With Mom it was constant, and is getting that way with Dad now.
I have a lady who comes in every week for two hours. She does the floors and
cleans the three bathrooms. This will have to stop as my husband is retiring and
the income will drop dramatically.
I garden for stress relief and knit as well when I can. I coach Special Olympics
once a week too. Keeps me busy! LOL.
Thank you and best regards,
Ruth Brown
Note from Maria Gracia
Ruth,
Thank you for your note. It sounds like you're helping your family members as
much as you can, which requires extra time on your part. I'm glad you've had
the help from the lady who has been cleaning your floors and your bathroom.
Since you won't be able to keep her, divvy those chores up between everyone
currently living in your house. You can't take everything on your shoulders.
Everyone needs to chip in. Many hands make light work.
I'm very happy to hear that you garden for stress-relief. Isn't it just
wonderful being outside in nature? I just love it! And good for you on coaching
for Special Olympics...I'm sure doing so is incredibly rewarding and I commend
you. You're keeping busy for sure...helping others and Making the world a nicer,
kinder place!

A Reader Asks, 'I'm Always Losing Gift Cards'
A GON Reader Asks
Because I'm so disorganized, I'm always losing gift cards before I have the
chance to enjoy them. Then I feel bad...like I'm throwing money away that my
generous family and friends gave me. Any thoughts?
Amelia, Tempe, Arizona
Maria Gracia Responds
Amelia,
So many gift cards are given as gifts...and never used. In fact, over one
billion gift cards purchased in America go unused every single year! Here are my
thoughts for you:
1) When you receive a gift card, use it quickly. Don't put the gift card
aside and tell yourself you'll use it sometime in the future. Go to the store or
web site, and use it immediately whenever possible.
2) Store gift cards in ONE place. The reason the gift cards are likely
getting lost is because you don't have a designated home to keep them. Likely
they're being tossed on the kitchen table or in a desk drawer. Have ONE
dedicated place for your gift cards, like a tin container in your bedroom
dresser or home office shelf. Alternately, you can keep them in your wallet in a
compartment used only for gift cards. When you need a card, they will ALWAYS
be in your designated place.
3) Remember to use gift cards. On your calendar, make an entry on a
recurring day each month, like the 10th of the month for instance, that says,
'Check gift card container.' In doing so, you'll be reminded that the gift
card is still waiting to be used.
4) Make a trade. If you get a gift card to a store or restaurant you're
not likely to use, there are online services that allow you to sell or swap gift
cards...some will even allow you to sell your unwanted gift cards for cash.
Hope this helps!
