Bright-Eyed and Bushy-Tailed or Tired and Grumpy?
Are you the type of person who wakes up 'bright-eyed and bushy-tailed' OR do you
snooze the alarm clock a million times and then slowly, and reluctantly, drag
yourself out of bed?
My husband told me that back in his military days, at an extremely early wake-up
time, Tech Sergeant Fussel used to say, 'When I flip the light switch on, your
feet better be on the floor before the room is fully lit!'
Talk about having to get up fast...and my husband slept on the top bunk!
Most of us don't have a sergeant at our bedside, thankfully, but here are some
ways you can train your body to feel better about getting up in the morning and
taking on your day.
1) Get enough sleep, but not too much. Seven to nine hours of shut-eye
every evening is optimal for most adults. That being said, sleeping longer than
nine hours can result in being even more tired. Plus, it has other risks
associated with it, such as cognitive impairment, depression, increased
inflammation, increased pain, impaired fertility, higher risk of obesity, higher
risk of diabetes, and higher risk of heart disease/stroke.
2) Be cognizant of blue light. Blue light is the light shining when you
check your phone, iPad, other tablet, laptop, etc. before bed and it's not
helping anyone fall asleep. Yet, 90% of people in the U.S. admit to using a
technological device during the hour before turning in. If you can, check your
devices after dinner, but avoid them during that hour prior to bedtime. Read an
old-fashioned book...the ones made with paper. I know...habits die hard, so if
you don't plan on taking this advice, at least turn down the brightness level of
your devices during that last hour before you sleep.
3) Find ways to relax before bed. Having a relaxing nighttime routine can
help calm your brain. Try a warm bath, lavender oil on your pillow and on the
back of your neck, a darkened room, sleep music or sleep sounds, deep breathing,
writing down 10 things you're grateful for in a journal, and similar 'slow down'
activities to prepare your mind and body for sleep.
4) Make good eating/drinking decisions prior to bedtime. My greatest
recommendation for you is to end your eating after dinner and forego the after-
dinner snacks. If you absolutely must have something before bed, have something
very light (half of a banana or an apple, a slice of turkey, a small amount of
almonds). Stay away from chocolate (I don't know about you, but any chocolate
before I sleep ends up in bizarre dreams and restless sleep for me), caffeinated
coffee or tea, soda and sugary cereal. In addition, water is very important to
the body. After several hours of sleep, it's easy to be dehydrated. So place a
glass of water next to your bed, and upon waking, drink up.
5) Let in some light. The darker it is in your room, the harder it is to
wake up. Don't use blinds or shades that completely block out the light. Opt for
those that partially filter the light, so there's plenty of light in the room
when you wake. If you're sleeping at a hotel, pull those heavy, dark curtains
open a bit before bed so light streams in when you wake.
6) Don't hit that snooze. As tempting as it is, when your alarm sounds,
get up and get going. Put your alarm on the opposite side of the room if
necessary, so you have to get out of bed to turn it off...and don't get back in
bed. Instead, go into the bathroom, brush your teeth, and wash your face. You
CAN do this, even if you've been living with the snooze button your entire
life.
7) Have a morning routine you look forward to. Most folks wake up and
immediately get into the routine if getting ready for work...chores at home or
work outside of the home. How about if, instead, you wake up and can take 10
minutes to watch the sunrise on from your deck, or do some energizing morning
stretches, or journal for 15 minutes at your kitchen table, or go for a walk
around the block, or read something inspirational? Maybe each night before you
go to bed, choose a delightful activity to do during the first 10-15 minutes of
your day. Yes, this may require you to wake up earlier. It's worth it. Go to bed
10-15 minutes earlier to make up for it.
Finally, whatever you do, don't have a cup of coffee as soon as you wake up.
Have a cool glass of lemon water or plain water instead. Wait until a few hours
have gone by for that first cup of coffee.
I find when I follow a bunch of these suggestions, my whole morning...and entire
day...goes a whole lot better, and I accomplish all of the tasks I set out to
do. Plus, it makes me a better mom, wife, worker, and friend, because I have the
time and energy to enjoy and help others without being tired and grumpy.

All people have clutter to some degree.
You may have a little bit of clutter sitting around--things that aren't really
serving any purpose, taking up unnecessary space, gathering dust, and causing a
bit of frustration.
Or perhaps you have LOADS of clutter and it's causing your life to be turned
upside down--you can't find things easily, you feel like your home is bursting
at the seams with STUFF, you have to climb over piles and boxes to get to
anything, and you feel overwhelmed and frustrated.
MOST people are somewhere right in the middle of these two situations.
For anyone who just has a little bit of clutter, have no doubt in your mind that
CLUTTER GROWS, and small challenges soon turn into large issues.
BUT, here's something NEW I discovered...
Clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may have in

basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home.
Clutter actually invades your life in FOUR forms...
1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
3. Digital Clutter
4. Emotional Clutter
And once it's there, it begins to wreak all sorts of havoc...

1) Get your TWO Summer TO DO lists finalized. The first TO DO list is for
tasks and chores around the house and at work. The second TO DO list is for
summer fun and enjoyment. Be sure you choose TO DOs from both lists every single
summer day!
2) Stock up on sunscreen and bug spray. There are many natural sunscreens
on the market these days to protect your skin from sunburn and ultra-violet
rays. Also, in most warm-weather areas, mosquitos, ticks, and other insects will
be out an about. There are many natural big sprays as well. Be sure to stock up
and protect yourself and your family.
3) Upgrade something. What needs to be upgraded in your life? Your phone?
A room in your house? Your vacuum? Upgrade something to make your life easier.
