How I Keep Clutter At Bay

One way I keep clutter at bay is I host garage sales...one at the end of spring, and one at the beginning of fall. My town does a city-wide rummage sale and I find, even with all the competition, that I do better on city-wide days. I guess that's when most garage/rummage sale/yard sale shoppers are out and about.

I have a special area of my basement designated for garage sale items. Every single day, I have a peek somewhere in my house...some mornings it's my bedroom closet, other mornings it's my kids rooms, and yet other days it's my basement. I find ONE item that I no longer need and want. Trust me, it's pretty easy, especially when you've been living in your home for 20 or more years like I have. In the garage sale space it goes!

I only do one item a day because that is a very doable goal.

When the city-wide rummage sale time rolls around, everything is already in one place for me to price and put outside for sale.

By the way, I've been doing OK with my garage sales for years, but since I picked up a copy of your Garage Sale Toolkit and applied the tips, my profit has tripled. Thanks for all the great ideas...and hope the one I gave above helps some of your other readers.

Good Summertime Salad Recipe

Hi Maria,

Just saying a big thank you for the `Good Salad Recipe' you provided a few weeks back. The first time I made it, I didn't have any almonds or swiss cheese, so I substituted walnut halves and a mix of feta cheese and cheddar cheese. Very good. Today, I made it again, with almonds.

We've finally got some bright, sunny weather here in the UK, so your timing was just right. Hubby liked it and mentioned the overnight recipe he likes as well. See below.

Overnight Summertime Salad

I've taken this from Dawna Walter's book: `New Leaf, New Life' (I no longer have a copy but it is a nice summertime recipe. Just vary the amounts depending on the size/shape of the bowl so there's more `base' than `topping.'

Dawna has been making this recipe for over 20 years. She says 'it's a family favorite and, although it may sound strange, it's delicious.' It's an American idea.

Serves: 8-10 approximately

Preparation Time: 30 mins (I'd say perhaps a bit more!) plus overnight standing

Ingredients

1 large head crisp lettuce (She prefers Iceberg, but I find Romaine is good), chopped

2 bunches spring onions, chopped (using the bulb plus 4 inches of the greens)

5 oz mayonnaise (I don't think I use quite this much! You'll need a small jar or so)

6 oz sugar (I try to reduce the sugar so just do just a couple of tablespoons)

1-1/2 lb frozen peas (Again, you may not need this much. Depends on size of the bowl. I suppose this is the `strange' ingredient?!

1 lb mild Cheddar cheese, grated

9 oz sliced, smoked bacon, cooked and cut into small pieces (*could use veggie alternative or try crisps?)

Preparation method

1. This salad is made in layers. Put the lettuce in a large bowl, then scatter the spring onions on top.

2. Mix together the mayo and sugar, beating well. Spoon this on top of the lettuce and onions.

3. Add layers of frozen peas, grated cheese, and finally the bacon.

4. Let sit overnight (cover with Cling Wrap) in a refrigerator before serving.

(Dawna's) Wine Tip

Try a Californian Chardonnay or a young Cabernet Sauvignon with this dish.

Grazie di nuovo,

Saluti dall'Inghilterra,

Anna

A Reader Asks, 'My House is Never 'Always' Clean'. Any suggestions?'

A GON Reader Asks

I suffer from multiple physical and mental disabilities. I recently took a medical retirement. I can only clean about 30 minutes at a time. I have a cleaning schedule: Meal Planning on Monday, Bathroom on Tuesday, etc. I am also decluttering my house 5-10 items per day. However, I feel because of this method my house is never 'always' clean. Do you have any additional suggestions?

Maria Gracia Responds

Traci,

With your health challenges, the fact that you can clean/organize for 30 minutes each day is AWESOME and something you should be very proud of. Good for you! There is no house that's always clean, unless you have a full-time housekeeper... or unless you dedicate every minute of your life to keeping it that way. That's just not realistic...even for someone who doesn't have any health challenges.

One option, if it's in your budget, is to hire a housecleaning service to come in every two weeks or once a month. Then, your whole house will be clean at one time...at least for a little while.

If this is not a possibility for you, your best bet is for you (and any other family members or exchange students you're hosting in your home) to 'clean as you go.' So, when you're done taking a shower, squeegee dry the shower walls. When you're cooking, rinse off prep dishes and place them in the dishwasher...don't wait until you're done cooking. When you bring in the mail, open it over the recycle bin. After you're done putting your makeup on, quickly wipe off the bathroom counter with a disinfectant wipe.

Small actions like these can really make a big difference in keeping your home pretty tidy overall...and eliminate the need for hours spent on big clean-ups and deep cleaning.

Finally, it's so easy to focus on what you 'haven't' been able to get to in your house. A good paradigm shift is to focus on what you 'have' been able to get to...and in your case, that's quite a bit...and you're doing so in a very methodical, productive, organized, effective manner.

Maria

All people have clutter to some degree.

You may have a little bit of clutter sitting around--things that aren't really serving any purpose, taking up unnecessary space, gathering dust, and causing a bit of frustration.

Or perhaps you have LOADS of clutter and it's causing your life to be turned upside down--you can't find things easily, you feel like your home is bursting at the seams with STUFF, you have to climb over piles and boxes to get to anything, and you feel overwhelmed and frustrated.
