Do These Little Things
To Make a Big Difference In Your Life
Sometimes, it's so easy to get caught up in the big events in life that we can
lose sight of the small moments that make up the bulk of our lives. We set big
goals for ourselves. We want to lose weight, be happy, be healthy, be a better
person. We watch the news and wish we could change the world. But it's often the
little things that can have a big impact on the direction our lives take. Try
even just one idea from the list below, and watch your life change for the
better:
1. Take time for yourself at the beginning of your day.
The way you start your day can set the tone for all the hours that follow. If
you can wake up even just 15 minutes before the others in your household, spend
that time on something that nourishes you emotionally. Whether you use this time
for meditation, yoga, reading something uplifting, writing in a journal...it
doesn't matter as much as that you began your day on a positive note.
2. Drink your water.
Even mild dehydration can have a negative impact on your health. Don't rely on
your thirst as a sign you need to drink; it's unreliable, especially as we get
older. Most experts advise eight to ten 8-ounce glasses each day, depending on
our weight and our activity level. Your energy, your skin, and your mood will
thank you for it.
3. Learn to Listen
Even with the best intentions, most of us are only half-listening to the other
person's end of the conversation. We are in our own heads planning what we are
going to say in response. Try listening, really listening to what someone is
saying: their words, their body language, their emotions. To really listen is
the best compliment you can give someone. Paying attention in this way can
increase your empathy, and you might even learn something.
4. Do one new thing each week.
Try a new recipe. If you normally read fiction, try a nonfiction book. Take a
different route to work. Hang a birdfeeder. Take your lunch outside. Do whatever
you can to shake up your routine just a little bit.
5. Move your body.
Even the simplest exercise not only helps you lose weight but pays big dividends
in terms of your health and your sense of well-being. Take the elevator instead
of the stairs. Park as far as you can away from the supermarket. Play with your
dog. Take a walk after dinner. A lot of little steps can add up to a big result.
6. Get 8 hours of sleep each night.
It is difficult to overstate how important it is to get enough high-quality
sleep. Sleep deprivation takes its toll on every aspect of your life. Even minor
tasks become more difficult. Try to get up and go to bed at the same times each
day. The right amount of sleep will do wonders for your mental health and even
your self-esteem.
7. Plant a garden.
It might be a few perennials in a small plot, a container garden on your deck,
or an herb garden on your windowsill. This simple action can give you the
feeling that you have created something new, and you can look forward to its
progress every day.
Remember that sometimes it's important to focus on the little things. You may
find to your delight that they can change your life in a big way.
'Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.'

Week Beginning June 30th
1) Be safe around fireworks. If you plan to be around fireworks for
Independence Day, remember safety precautions. Alcohol and fireworks are a
dangerous combination...don't mix the two. Don't bring pets to fireworks
displays...and put your pet in a safe, interior room to avoid sound exposure.
Invest in ear plugs for your family so you can enjoy the show, without
experiencing hearing damage. Observers, especially children, should always be an
extra-safe distance (30 feet for ground-based fireworks and 140 feet for any
aerial product) away from where fireworks are being set off.
2) Clean items that are hanging in your home. Hanging items include,
but are not limited to, mirrors, picture frames, artwork, chandeliers, light
fixtures. Dust them off, and use glass cleaner if appropriate.
3) Get rid of one bag of excess junk. 'Junk' is anything that you have
that you're not using...and that someone else can't (or wouldn't want to) use
either. Try to fill up one full bag of junk and place it at your curbside for
garbage pick-up.
