How I Keep My Chest Freezer Organized
I don't live very close to a grocery store, so I buy quite a bit when I do make
the trek to go shopping, and I freeze a whole bunch of it when I arrive home. I
have a chest freezer, and throughout the years, it has been a bear to keep
organized. Then, you mentioned a tip a few years ago that, I think, is very
worthy of reiterating to your readers.
Plastic Dollar Store bins can be purchased in a variety of colors and shapes and
has done wonders in helping me keep everything organized and neat as a pin.
Plus, it's very easy to sort like-items together, and to move the bins around as
needed. The same idea can be applied to a regular upright freezer as well! This
tip, that you gave me so many years ago, has stood the test of time!

Big Steps Forward For Me
I am trying to make progress on my house this summer without the help of my
long-time college helper. She worked for me for two years, is gone for the
summer, and will need to get a job at the hospital when she returns, since she
is pre-med. So the first step is keeping up the housecleaning routines by
myself.
I went back to using my household management chart (adapted from a classroom
management chart) more consistently. The week before last, I completed about 75
percent of the chores, but last week I did them all! (Each green slip has a
task on it, like empty dishwasher, make bed, etc. As they're completed, they
are moved into the 'done' slot.)
I was done with everything except 'swish and swipe kitchen counters' and 'dust'
last night, so I bit the bullet and did both of those before I went to bed. I
also slept better, since I had removed a bunch of dust that had built up in my
bedroom. I also did two extra loads of laundry last week, since I had come back
from a trip a few weeks ago and still had to get caught up.
Last week, I finally went to an all-digital newspaper subscription, so that will
save me time and save me from the newspapers that usually pile up, even with
only getting the weekend newspaper.
I only have two and a half weeks left before my big trip this summer, but I will
try to complete the household management chart each week before then, and
hopefully have time to do some more organizing before then!
It may not seem like it to 'born organized' people, but these are big steps
forward for me!

A Reader Asks, 'What's Your Best Advice for
a Super-Disorganized Person?'
A GON Reader Asks
I honestly feel like I'm the most disorganized person on earth. My house is a
mess...I have so much stuff. My husband and kids have followed suit. And I can't
even think straight...I'm late for appointments, behind on all my projects, and
constantly frustrated. I know this question would take an encyclopedia of
organizing knowledge to fix, but what's your best advice for a
super-disorganized person?
Raigan in Chicago, IL
Maria Gracia Responds
Hi Raigan,
Trust me, a lot of people feel they're the most disorganized person on earth, so
don't feel like you're the only person with organizing challenges...and the
good news is, you can overcome these challenges, no matter how big they may
seem to you.
Here's my best 1-2-3 advice for you to get started:
1) You're an organized-person-in-process. Don't label yourself as super-
disorganized. Doing so only helps to convince you that you are disorganized and
you have to stay that way. Instead, label yourself as an
'organized-person-in-process.'
2) Say goodbye to 5 items a day. You said you have 'so much stuff.' That
is a big, red flag to me. Every single day, for as long as it takes, don't go to
bed without getting rid of (donating or trashing) at least 5 items you and your
family aren't using. The last thing you want to do is spend a whole lot of time
attempting to organize clutter. Make this a family affair, so everyone embarks
on the decluttering mission.
3) Work on no more than four at a time. Stop trying to get a million
things done. Write four TO DOs down on today's list. Work on them until they're
complete. Don't add any more, under any circumstances, until those four are
done. Then, add four more. Repeat.
There's more to organizing than this, of course. BUT, these tips alone will
give you a very good head-start on your organizing journey.
