Feeling Lazy Today? Time to Step Things Up!

Do you ever get up knowing you have a lot to do, but you just don't feel like doing anything? Maybe you're even feeling a bit lazy? How do you give yourself that needed jump start?

1) First, stop and think. Is there a reason for feeling lazy? How do you feel physically? Are you unusually tired? Or are your allergies acting up? Address any physical reasons first. Remember that dehydration can quickly make you feel fatigued. Drink a big glass of water, maybe two, and see if you feel better. Movement can help too. Go to the gym first-thing, preferably to a class with peppy music. Or put on some music at home and dance. Music and movement are energizers.

2) Are you feeling lazy because you are avoiding something or because a TO DO you must do feels overwhelming? I was chatting with my friend, Erica, who told me that she knew she needed to clean up the kitchen, including mopping the floor, but just kept putting it off. Instead, she convinced herself she had to handle some other tasks first...read the paper, check Facebook, iron a blouse, call her mom...before she knew it, the day went by, and the kitchen was left undone. It's important that you recognize when your 'laziness' is not 'feeling tired', but rather 'you not wanting to do something' in disguise. To combat this, don't allow yourself to do ANYTHING else until the dreaded task is done...first thing. Starting is half the battle. The next morning, Erica took charge. She woke up and before she even had her morning coffee, she picked a corner of the kitchen and cleaned it, moving on to the next space, and then to the one after. Soon the kitchen...and kitchen floor...sparkled. This gave her a sense of accomplishment that she enjoyed with her morning coffee!

3. Focus. Sometimes it feels like there is so much on our lists, that getting 'everything' done resembles a colossal undertaking. Stop thinking of everything. When you think you must get 'everything done,' typically 'very little' actually gets done. Pick ONE thing and zero in. When it's done, move on to something else. By the way, your ONE thing shouldn't be something HUGE. A task like, 'call the doctor to make an appointment' is doable. A task like, 'clean the entire garage' is HUGE...and should be broken up into little pieces done a bit at a time.

4. Organize. Keep your environment organized and tidy daily. Pick up, put away, etc. 'as you go.' It's easy to feel lazy, when you know even starting your project requires you to clean up beforehand.

5. Change your mindset. Listen to what you are telling yourself. Are you thinking, 'This is a really hard job. It's going to take all day! I'm too tired to do all this work.' If so, you're then allowing yourself to feel cranky about it...and laziness is bound to set in soon afterwards. Flip flop your behavior and thoughts. Stand up straight, smile, give yourself some positive, 'I can' self-talk, and feel gratitude for the ability you have to do the task or part of it. Set your eyes on the goal...a beautifully, clean kitchen...the feeling you'll have when your papers are all filed away and no more piles are visible...the sense of accomplishment you'll get when your work project is completed.

6. Use incentives (rewards). Cleaning out the pantry may not seem so exciting in itself...and, in fact, can bring on a dreaded, lazy feeling. BUT, rewarding yourself with 30 minutes of uninterrupted time to read your favorite novel on the deck AFTER you clean out the pantry is much more appealing! Give yourself incentives to get going and get finished... so you can enjoy your rewards!

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning June 23rd

1) Organize and clean the area under your kitchen sink. The cabinet under the kitchen is often cluttered with dishsoap, dishwasher detergent, disinfectant sprays, oven cleaner, sponges, vases, and a bunch of unrelated items sometimes too. When helping out a client last week, we found bubbles and bubble wands, cat treats, and a plethora of plastic grocery bags. This week, empty the entire area out. Get rid of anything you don't need, and that doesn't belong there. Then, reorganize the keepers back in, using tubs and baskets (Dollar Store) and such to keep items sorted and neat.

2) Wake up early and watch the sunrise. Although I wake up fairly early every day, it's generally not before the sun rises. But some days, I set my alarm clock so I'm up with the early birds, in time to catch the morning sunrise in all its glory. Why not do the same this week? Check sunrise time in your area (where I live in Wisconsin, it's around 5:15 a.m.) and set your alarm clock to sound about 15 minutes before. This should give you enough time to grab a cup of juice or coffee and enjoy it thoroughly before beginning your day. Of course, check the weather report too...sunrises are better when it's not raining.

3) Change a bad habit. What do you do on a regular basis that's not a great thing to be doing? Biting your nails? Arriving late for every appointment? Losing your patience with your spouse? Leaving the bathroom a mess before you leave for work? Focus on one bad habit, and vow to do whatever you can to change it this week. Put it in writing, replace the bad habit with a good one, and practice, practice, practice...until the bad habit is history.
