How To Prevent a Cutting Board From Slipping

I nearly fainted last week as I watched my daughter-in-law cutting up veggies on her cutting board (the 'plastic' ones made from that polyethylene material), while the cutting board was slipping around on her counter. This was an accident waiting to happen!

I quickly wet a dish towel, squeezed it to wring out as much water as I could, and placed it under her cutting board. This stopped the board from slipping, and probably prevented me from having a near panic attack! I love this young lady so much, and she expressed appreciation for the tip. I pray she continues to use it.

Alternately, a wet paper towel or non-slip mat could also be used.

I hope some of your readers will benefit from this kitchen safety tip.

Your Advice Makes Me Feel Better and Motivated

Maria,

You are one of my health care providers! Your advice always makes me feel better and motivated to nudge that STUFF a little farther from the center of my life. Your insight on the different kinds of clutter is right on. We have so many more important things to do with our time and talent than waste it on ARCHIVING insignificant tidbits of objects, data, etc. Thank you for all your help over the years. My favorite de-clutter tool is a timer. It keeps me from zigzagging and helps me stay focused.

A Reader Asks, 'How Do I Stop My Kids from Slamming Doors?'

A GON Reader Asks

I have a lot of children constantly over my house...three of my own kids, AND the neighbor kids. Since my kids range from toddler age on up, very often the older ones will want their bedroom doors closed, so the younger kids don't invade their privacy. Last week, one of the neighbor kids slammed one of the bedroom doors shut, and I watched in horror as my toddler child pulled her hand back just in the nick of time before her fingers were smashed.

I've asked the kids not to slam the doors, but as you know with kids, this falls on deaf ears. They remember for a minute or two, and then they forget. Any ideas?

Victoria B., Clarksville, Tennessee

Maria Gracia Responds

Victoria,

The sound of children can be so glorious, but definitely not the sound of their screams when their fingers are smashed in a door. I'm so relieved to hear your young child didn't end up in the ER with broken fingers.

Use cut-up pool noodles as door stoppers. Cut a pool noodle to shorter lengths, make a slit down one side, and slide over the edge of the interior doors in your home. Place it towards the top of the door where little kids can't reach it. Even if the doors get slammed shut, the pool noodle should prevent kids whose hands are in the door frame from getting their fingers squished. Most stores that sell baby gear also sell pinch guards, but the pool noodles work great and are less expensive.

Of course, kids will still be needed to reminded of safety when they're playing in your home...because there are many other possible hazards. For instance, there are doors that lead outside. You can't really put pool noodles on those.

When my daughter was younger and I had children over my house, I posted a 'house rules' sign by my entry door. It included rules like 'no door slamming,' 'no rough-housing,' 'no jumping on furniture' ... and the like. This was a 'living document' that was updated with new rules as needed.

Knowing that kids will be kids, I knew the sign would not be enough. So every time (yes, every single time) the kids had other kids over to play, either me or my husband would review the rules with them one by one. The kids knew that they would not get too many 'broken rule warnings' before the play date would come to an end, so we didn't have too many issues with the kids 'remembering' the rules.

Will the kids roll their eyes every time you read the rules? Maybe. But safety comes first. Hope this helps. Thank you for asking!

Maria
