Use Your Paper Address Book for More Than Contact Information

Maria,

I love, love, love your GON Newsletter, your Anything and Everything eMagazine, and the all the various products purchased over the last several years. Still using them and refer to them often! You have given us all excellent information and continue to do so. A million thank yous for that.

Here is a Reader's Tip:

A simple, paper address book can be used for so much more.

It is really an alphabetizing system.

Besides using it for names, contact info, birthdays, email addresses, etc., it is great to use it for quick reference for information like:

B - measurements for BATHROOM Curtains

P - PRINTER ink cartridge numbers

C - dimensions of COUCH for when it is time to replace

T - TABLE measurements for tablecloths and decorations

M - MATTRESS warranty info and date purchased

The Ultimate Price for Being Disorganized

Maria,

I saw a show on TV this morning and it is still haunting me. The show was about 'Forgotten Ellis Island.' A young Australian, who was not even trying to immigrate, but rather simply visit New York, forgot his passport when he got off the ship. Because of this, he could not prove his identity.

He ended up detained at Ellis Island while the authorities investigated his claims. During that time, he developed scarlet fever and died...all because he lost his passport! The ultimate price for being disorganized.

I thought you might want to hear about this, sad as it is.

Pat Quatraro

A Reader Asks, 'I am horrible at getting big projects done...can you help?'

A GON Reader Asks

I am very busy and always have a long TO DO list. I can always get the smaller tasks done, like making dental appointments, getting my kids to soccer practice, or RSVPing to an invitation, but I can never seem to get big projects done, like researching better health insurance or organizing the garage. Any thoughts?

Lela C., Dallas, TX

Maria Gracia Responds

Lela,

The first three tasks you mentioned are pretty much all one step tasks.

Making a dental appointment requires you to pick up the phone and call. Getting your kids to soccer practice requires you to get in your car and drive your kids to the field. RSVPing to an invitation requires you to make a quick phone call or send a fast text.

BUT, when it comes to bigger projects like researching better health insurance or organizing the garage, those are big projects with MANY steps.

Number one: It's very easy to push these projects aside because they're going to take a whole lot more time than making one call.

Number two: It's nearly impossible to not feel overwhelmed when you're looking at those two projects 'in full.'

Each of them needs to be broken down into single tasks, so that you can complete one to two of them each day.

For instance, one step for researching better health insurance may be to make a list of possible companies you plan to research.

Step two may be to get contact information for these companies.

Step three may be to make yourself a grid based on what you're trying to compare (coverage, rates, etc.)

Same goes for organizing the garage. For most folks who have neglected the garage for awhile, looking at it as a whole can seem like a very daunting job.

Breaking it down into steps, however, would be perceived by most people to be more doable. Steps may include...

* call sanitation department to learn how to dispose of old paint cans
* clear the one shelf that's currently holding the garden supplies
* put the kids sporting gear into a storage container

Breaking large projects down into doable mini-steps will help you get the job done. Maybe it won't get done TODAY...but every step you complete will get you one step closer to getting that project crossed off your list.

Hope this helps,

Maria
