The Struggle of Letting Go of Sentimental Clutter
Even the most organized people have some type of clutter in their homes. Often
it is a result of allowing meaningless things to accumulate over time or from
bringing something into the home without taking anything out.
Although eliminating this type of clutter takes some physical effort on your
part, once you set your mind to it, it can be managed. Things you use regularly
stay. Things you don't use go. It is a very simple formula.
But what if the things you are holding onto have sentimental value? How do you
let go of something that holds deeper meaning?
Years ago, my mother gave me a wind up chiming clock that she had hanging in my
childhood home. It was a nice enough clock and for years and I had it hanging in
my own home. As time went on, I moved several times and the clock went with me.
Eventually my decor changed and the clock stopped keeping proper time, but yet I
held onto it in a box in my basement. I couldn't let myself get rid of it
because it had been given to me by my mother. Even though I didn't have a place
for it anymore and it wasn't functioning properly, I still clung to it.
Then one day it occurred to me. When my mother gave it to me, it was probably
because she no longer had a use for it and thought that maybe I would. I did
initially, but as time passed, I ended up in the same position she had been
in... no longer needing the clock.
I have since realized something. Hanging on to items that hold sentimental value
is fine as long as it is something that you will actually use (or display) and
enjoy.
I have a friend who currently has a outside storage unit full of items that
belonged to her mother that she acquired after her mother died. Do the items
have use or value? Possibly. Do they have use or value to her? Clearly they do,
but only on a sentimental level. Month after month she pays the storage unit
fees to store items that she has no immediate use for all because they belonged
to her mother. These items are all packed in boxes. She never even looks at
them.
There is nothing wrong with hanging on to things that have sentimental value. I
am certain that we all have possessions that fit into that category. The
problems arise when our sentiments take over and we allow somebody else's
clutter to become OUR clutter. Only keep the items that have the most value and
use to you...and use/display them accordingly. Bid farewell to the rest. As far
as the chiming clock, I had a friend of mine fix the clock mechanism and I then
sold it to a very happy buyer at my last garage sale.

July Checklist: Are you following my July 2018 Organizing Checklist?
When you do, you get an organizing TO DO you can do each day to get and stay
organized
getorganizednow.com
Week Beginning July 14
1) Clean windows. It's such a beautiful time of year to look outside,
enjoying the trees, flowers, and birds. Don't allow dirty windows to ruin it
for you. Clean your windows or hire someone to clean them for you.
2) Keep your home safe and possessions safe. It's a good time of year to
be sure you're doing what you can to keep your home and possessions safe. Do you
need to review your homeowners or renters insurance with your agent? Do you have
valuables laying around in clear view that you can safely store? Does your
family know your fire evacuation plan? Are your fire and carbon monoxide
detectors in good working order? Is your fire extinguisher up to date? Are you
diligently locking your home and car doors?
3) Make one of those recipes you've been saving. We've all done it
before... cut or 'pinned' recipes (on Pinterest) and never bothered to make
them. Change that pattern this week and actually make one of those recipes.
'I have a fond daydream of a day when I can bring people through my house
without hesitation, without secrecy, and without closed doors. More than that, I
envision a day when I can confidently stride into every room of my house and
find my children's birth certificates or my high school year book or a needle
and thread whenever the need presents itself without breaking into hives.'
