Are Other People Making Your TO DO List Longer?

What does your TO DO list look like today? Is it 7 pages long? Does it feel as if your life is made up of a gazillion TO DOs with little time left for any fun or relaxation whatsoever? If so, it's time to reevaluate.

Look at your list. What are the absolute necessities? Perhaps your dental appointment, paying the bills, and grocery shopping has to happen today, but what's on your list that doesn't? Not every TO DO that doesn't get done is going to have much impact on your life, especially those that involve tasks you feel you 'should' do, but you don't really want to?

Here are the types of TO DOs I'm talking about:

1) Call Sally to get together for lunch. You don't really want to, but are planning to get together anyway because you're afraid of declining the invitation?

2) Read book for book chat. You're no longer interested in attending, but fear what your friends will think.

3) Attend the church meeting. You like going to the meetings, but you also know it's going to involve you getting roped into helping out at the bake sale...again. And you really don't have time to bake.

Sometimes, it's unpleasant to say no, but remember, you're not saying no to the person, but rather to the request.

'Thanks so much for inviting me to lunch, but I just can't fit one more appointment into my schedule.'

'I have enjoyed book chat through the years, but I've decided to pursue some other interests at this time.'

Go ahead and attend the church meeting since you like going, but when asked to bake, say, 'I appreciate you asking me to the meeting, but I have very limited time in my schedule to volunteer. I would be happy to assist once a year with the big turkey dinner, but that's about all I can offer.'

Sometimes when I am wrestling with whether I should do something, especially when it is a request for my time, I ask myself, 'What if I were sick and could not do it? Would the job still get done?' Almost always the answer is yes.

Too often our TO DO lists get lengthened by other people's tasks. Your teenage son, for instance, is just as capable of going to the auto parts store for new windshield wipers as you. Yes, do a favor every now and then, but don't always add items to your list just to help someone else make their list shorter.

Sure, help out when you really want to, but be careful. TO DO lists can quickly grow longer and longer until you are feeling completely overwhelmed and unable to complete any of your tasks.

Yes, 'TO DO' lists are important. 'NOT TO DO' lists are way up there in importance as well.

People are always asking me how they can find more time in their lives...

* I would love to do (you fill in the blank), but there's just not enough time

* I wish I could spend more quality time with my loved ones and/or my friends

* There's just not enough hours in the day to get everything done

Do you wonder why you're always struggling with your endless TO DO list, limited time for yourself and others, and not even enough hours to get a meal on the table or a good night's sleep?

If your lack of time frustrates you, you can bet that it's frustrating those around you too. Lack of time is one of the biggest contributors to the stress and chaos in so many of our lives.

Do you ever envy 'lucky' people who seem to have all the time in the world to do everything they want and never seem frazzled or frustrated? Why is time such a frustration for many...and not a problem for others?

The answer is--those who have mastered time know certain time SECRETS that others don't.

I know these secrets, and I can't wait to share them with you. You'll find them all in my '501 Tips and Ideas for Finding More Time for the Things You Love.' Visit:

  TO DO This Week

Week Beginning July 28

1) Inventory and buy school supplies. If you have a child going back to school in August or September, now is the time to get those school supplies together. Go through what you may still have from last school year, and make a list of anything needed. Keep everything together in one place, all ready for the first day back. It's also prime time for back-to-school clothes shopping.

2) Replace your air conditioner filter. The air filter on your heating and cooling system needs to be replaced every 1-3 months. Doing so keeps the air in your home clean and flowing freely through the unit. Replace it this week.

3) Clear the top of a table. Whether it's your kitchen table, dining room table, or a table at work, table surfaces tend to easily end up with piles of papers and other clutter. Make it a point to set aside 20 minutes to clear it off, trashing/recycling anything unnecessary, and putting everything else back where it belongs.
