  Fabulous Reader Tip

Always Forgetting Keys, Phone, Wallet...

Maria,

I can be a bit scattered sometimes. In the past, I left my wallet at the pool. Thank goodness someone turned it in. In the past, on occasion, I've also left my cell phone in restaurants...as well as my credit card used for just paying the bill, my reading classes at home when I need them for work, and I was always endlessly searching for my keys as well.

I'm not officially diagnosed with ADHD, but I'm pretty sure I have it. I just started reading your newsletter about two months ago, and already, I feel like I'm more mindful and organized...I thank you for that.

I know you're always emphasizing to write things down, and I took that to heart.

So, I made a list of everything I need with me when I'm coming and going and keep that list in my purse. It includes keys, purse, wallet, phone, eye glasses, coupons, medication, grocery list, errand list...and other items like that. It has about 20 items listed on it.

Now, the only thing I have to remember before I leave or go anywhere is to check my list. I actually had it laminated, so I can check to be sure I have each of the items listed, and I physically check each one off with a Sharpie.

At first, I was just doing a 'visual' check, but I found that I was still forgetting things this way. My rule is, I have to actually touch the item before I check it off...and not just check off because I 'think' I have it. I have to '100% know' I have it before it gets checked off.

Doing this has helped me tremendously, and so far, for the past month, nothing has been left behind.

Hope this tip helps a few of your newsletter readers.

Getting My Child Back to a Practical Sleep and Wake Schedule for School

A GON Reader Asks

'I've been really lax with my 8-year-old son who has been up until midnight (sometimes later) every night this summer, and worse, sleeping until nearly noon. How do I get him, as painlessly as possible, back to a practical sleep and wake schedule for school in September?'

Mary Ellen, Sheboygan, WI

Maria Gracia Responds

Mary Ellen,

It's very easy for sleep and wake schedules to go off-kilter during the summer months. In fact, it's probably one of the sweet memories your son will have later on in life...those wonderful summer nights when he was able to enjoy the stars, fireflies, evening festivals...and those great summer mornings when he could sleep in without a worry in the world.

If there's something I don't enjoy is watching kids grow up way too fast. Childhood should be filled with magic and special memories.

With school approaching in September, of course, you don't want to make things harder on yourself than they need to be, and it takes a bit of time and effort to readjust to the required school-year schedule.

Let him enjoy the next few weeks, but starting 14 days before school begins, start adjusting. Here's a possible schedule, assuming he has to wake up for school at 7:00am...and requires 11 hours of sleep. You may have to re-adjust if he needs more time depending on when the first school bell rings...and how long he needs to get ready for school, eat breakfast, be transported there, etc.

14 days before: Go to bed at 11:30P and wake up at 10:30A
13 days before: Go to bed at 11:15P and wake up at 10:15A
12 days before: Go to bed at 11:00P and wake up at 10:00A
11 days before: Go to bed at 10:45P and wake up at 9:45A
10 days before: Go to bed at 10:30P and wake up at 9:30A
9 days before: Go to bed at 10:15P and wake up at 9:15A
8 days before: Go to bed at 10:00P and wake up at 9:00A
7 days before: Go to bed at 9:45P and wake up at 8:45A
6 days before: Go to bed at 9:30P and wake up at 8:30A
5 days before: Go to bed at 9:15P and wake up at 8:15A
4 days before: Go to bed at 9:00P and wake up at 8:00A
3 days before: Go to bed at 8:45P and wake up at 7:45A
2 days before: Go to bed at 8:30P and wake up at 7:30A
1 day before: Go to bed at 8:15P and wake up at 7:15A
Day before school: Go to bed at 8:00P and wake up at 7:00A

Continue the 8:00P bedtime and the 7:00A wake-time for the whole school year. If you want to adjust on the weekends, don't do so by more than one hour.

This gradual method works because it's not as noticeable, and it will give his body and mind ample time to get used to the new sleep schedule.

Hope this helps and wishing your son the best school year yet!

Maria
