Staying Ahead of the Game With Back-to-School TO DOs

Maria,

Your newsletter is THE BEST...it has helped me and my family get and stay organized for years!

My tips are for the back-to-school season. Like many kids, my kids will be back in school in September. I have four...4th grade, 6th grade, 8th grade, and the fourth a senior in high school. We're already beginning to receive beginning of the year registration from the schools.

1) As soon as I am made aware of important dates, such as school registration, the day the kids drop off supplies, school photo day, etc., I immediately get those dates input into my phone calendar...with reminders set for the day before and the day of. In doing so, nothing is missed...and there is a lot to miss for parents with multiple kids, so it's important to stay organized.

2) I shop for school supplies NOW, in July. Most of the stores are already stocked and school lists are out. I know many parents and kids don't want to think about school during summer vacation, but the stores have everything needed in July and there's very little chance of anything running out.

3) I set a date with each of my four kids to inventory clothes for school...which takes some time because if often involves trying on. The older ones can usually get away with wearing quite a bit from the previous year...and of course, the younger kids have the benefit (they don't see it as a benefit, but I do) of hand-me-downs. I then make lists of anything the kids need, and I take each of the kids clothes shopping on different days. This gives me a chance to focus on one child at a time. We make it really special...it includes a lunch (usually at a sandwich shop) and bonding time.

A Little Tale Inspired by Your Newsletter

Hi Maria,

I thought you might like to hear this little tale, inspired by your email newsletter on June 6, 2018.

What a wonderful idea to use a stop sign to help with mental clutter. It has been helping!

I thought I'd take it a step further. I thought to myself...when my husband bickers or gets into one of his ranting fits...I could hold it up like Wile E. Coyote. Then he may realize that I really mean STOP.

So on the way home, I stopped at a little shop that I knew would have one and bought a stop sign.

Turns out it works with my own mental clutter, but only works with my husband when I bang him on the head with it!

I hope I made you chuckle.

Love,

Doris Portelli

A Reader Asks, 'How do I tell a friend to come get the stuff she is storing at my house?'

A GON Reader Asks

'A friend of mine downsized to a smaller home a few months ago. At that time, she asked me to store a bunch of stuff for her until she figured out what to do with it...a sofa, a kitchen set, a futon, and five boxes of miscellaneous. I said yes at the time, and now I regret it. I've asked her, nicely, to come and get it twice. It's taking up space in my basement. Each time, she said she would...as soon as she could find the time. But it's still sitting here and it's really in the way. I'm used to having a nice, organized, uncluttered home and this is really bothering me. What should I do?'

Alejandra J., New Mexico

Maria Gracia Responds

Alejandra,

Honestly, I think you've been more-than-nice to your friend, holding on to her belongings for two months and counting.

If I were you, I'd call her and say, 'I know you're super-busy, but I really have to get my basement space back. I'll need you to get it picked up before Friday' (give her an actual date that's not more than two weeks away.) Hopefully, this will do the trick.

If she still doesn't pick it up by that date, I would call her one last time and suggest that she rents a storage space. Give her one final date (a few days away) and tell her if she can't pick up by that date, you'll have it delivered to her home (even if it ends up costing you to do so). Alternately, you might offer to call a donation company and have it picked up.

I know you probably don't want to lose a friend over this, but it sounds like she is taking advantage of you and putting you in an unpleasant position.

I'm all for helping friends out...and I do so graciously whenever I can...but sometimes generosity given can be abused.

Hope this helps. Please keep me posted.

Maria

  In Closing

'If you allow people to make more withdrawals than deposits in your life, you will be out of balance and in the negative before you know it. Know when to close the account. It's always better to be alone with dignity than in a relationship that constantly requires you to sacrifice your happiness and self- respect.'

Your Holiday Season is Guaranteed

Christmas is supposed to be the season of joy, warmth, reflection, and good will. Why then, is it such a stressful time for so many people? There's no doubt about it. Once Thanksgiving ends, life gets busy.

There are holiday cards to be sent. Gifts to be purchased or made. Holiday dinners to plan. Church, community, and family get-togethers to attend. Holiday treats to bake. Stockings to stuff. Tree trimming, gift wrapping, and getting your house ready for company. The list is endless.

It's no wonder there's so much stress and exhaustion at Christmas-time.

The good news is, it doesn't have to be that way.

That's where my Christmas Holiday Planner comes in. You see, knowing about all the stress and frustration so many people experience this time of year, I thought to myself, 'There has to be a better way...Christmas is supposed to be a joyful, cheerful time.'

And then, suddenly, it hit me. I had to do something to help folks plan and prepare better. I had to help get all of the information, ideas, and notes into one place. It needed to be a cinch to use. It had to have the ability to store information that almost everyone who celebrates Christmas needs to have handy. And it had to be cost-effective.

And that's how the Get Organized Now! Christmas Holiday Planner was born. It's ready to help you experience your most organized Christmas ever this year! For more details, visit:
