A Reader Asks, 'How Can I Keep My Towels Soft?'
Hi Maria,
Although the towels in my house were only purchased about 6 months ago, they're
already feeling stiff and scratchy. Plus, they're not absorbing water very well.
I seem to always have this problem, even though the towels I'm purchasing are
not exactly inexpensive. Sigh. Any thoughts?
Amy J., North Brunswick, NJ
Hi Amy,
1. Stiff and scratchy towels are no fun. Here are my recommendations for getting
yours back to a soft, cozy, fluffy state.
2. Load your washing machine with towels, choose the hot water cycle, and add a
cup of vinegar, either to the compartment where you normally pour the detergent
or right into the drum. Do not add detergent or fabric softener. Run a wash
cycle.
3. When the cycle is complete, do not remove the towels. Instead, add a cup of
baking soda to the load (no detergent or fabric softener) and run another wash
cycle.
Following these steps should help transform your towels from scratchy to soft.
However, if they are badly coated with residue you may need to repeat these
steps one more time.
Repeat this towel treatment once a month for the softest, fluffiest, cuddliest
towels!
In addition, whenever you wash towels (or any clothes for that matter):
a) Cut back on detergent. You don't have to use as much as the detergent company
suggests.
b) Don't overstuff the washing machine. When you do, there's not enough space
to rinse out all the dirt and detergent.
c) Always keep two clean tennis balls in the laundry room. When you're drying
towels, toss the balls in too. This helps fluff your towels.
Hope this helps.
