Simplify Your Life for Happiness

For so long, we've been taught to believe in the philosophy of more; that we'd be happy if only we had more clothes, more friends, a bigger house, more money, more toys, more...everything. Only now are we learning that having more can be too much and can decrease our happiness as well. This can cost us time, worry, and energy. Could it be that what we need is not more, but less? Could it be that true happiness may be best found simply...in simplicity? Here are three examples to help you begin to simplify for happiness.

1) We can limit our choices. Have you ever felt the pains of having a closet of clothes and yet nothing to wear, holding onto clothes that no longer fit, flatter, or are appropriate for your everyday lifestyle? Why not keep only those items that fit your body as it is now, that suit your lifestyle now, that make you feel good now? Let the rest go, and add selectively. You can choose good quality, classic pieces in flattering colors that can be mixed, matched and accessorized to meet many needs. In doing so, you can wake up, and dress quickly and appropriately for whatever the day might bring, knowing that no matter what you wear, you're going to look your best.

2. We can think smaller. Did you know that new homes today, in the United States, are 1,000 square feet larger than in 1973 and living space per person has nearly doubled? This is yet another example of wanting more. What has happened as a consequence of this? Clutter has increased as well. After all, people have larger spaces to fill. Some folks, however, are scaling down, choosing smaller homes (even, in some cases, super-tiny homes) and finding the freedom that this can bring. Of course, not everyone is in a position to up and move...and not everyone wants smaller living quarters. But, there's something to be said about living with less. By making a commitment to get rid of possessions we no longer need, keeping only those things that are functional, beautiful, fit in our space well, and make us happy, living with less can be quite liberating!

3. We can shrink our social circles. While it's certainly wonderful to have friends, making time for too many people can mean that we never have enough time for deep, meaningful relationships with those who really make a difference in our lives. So if you find yourself going to social clubs you're no longer interested in, having regular lunches with those who you bring you down instead of up, or participating in volunteer activities that are no longer near and dear to your heart, it may be high time to shrink your social circle...and give yourself the time you need to nurture your most important relationships.

In summary, instead of thinking in terms of more, think in terms of 'just enough.' By aiming for simplicity, you just might stumble upon something wonderful that 'more' never brought.
