  Organizing Tip

Organizing...Find the Motivation

When it comes to getting organized (or getting any kind of work done for that matter), it can sometimes be a challenge to find the motivation to get going. Trust me, I get it. Most of us would rather be sitting in the backyard, relaxing on a hammock, sipping a lemonade (or a glass of wine), than organizing the closet, paying the bills, or weeding the garden.

Yet, there is something very special and calming about being organized and having a sense of accomplishment.

So, the question is, how does one get motivated to get to those 'feel good' points?

I have a few recommendations that I use myself...and they work beautifully.

1) Don't make anything you have to do take longer than 15 minutes. Let me explain. Obviously, some projects are going to take longer than 15 minutes, like painting a room, organizing a basement, or doing a big project for work. HOWEVER, you can take ANY project, and break it up into tiny, more doable pieces. When you're writing up your TO DO list, keep this in mind. Each TO DO should be no more than 15 minutes. If it is, break it up into two TO DOs, or three, or four. Focus on getting just one of those 15-minute TO DOs done at a time, and you'll immediately begin making progress. Plus, knowing you only have to work on something for 15 minutes is way less stressful than knowing you have a 3-hour project ahead of you.

2) Make a task-reward sandwich. First, come up with a list of tiny, but fun, rewards that you'll enjoy...like 5-minutes outside listening to the birds sing, a hot cup of spiced orange tea, or a few minutes scrolling through your Facebook feed. Try to list at least 20 rewards or as many as you can come up with. Then, for every ONE 15-minute task you complete, savor one of your rewards. Sandwich task, then reward, then task, then reward...repeat. Trust me when I say that taking a break in between tasks can make a busy day feel so much more enjoyable. Plus, having a pending reward at the beginning of each task gives you something to look forward to.

By applying these two important steps to any work you have to do, you'll be able to find that motivation you need to begin...and finish!
