Once you zone in on the area you want to declutter, such as a cabinet, a shelf, or the surface of a desk or table, empty that area completely...all the way to the bare bones.

This is not only a less overwhelming approach, but also allows you to ensure you're doing a thorough decluttering job. Once it's empty, attempt to reduce the items you've removed, by 50% or more, adding unwanted/unneeded belongings to a donation bag/box as you go.

I must mention that this is NOT to say that if you're organizing your garage, you have to clear EVERYTHING out onto your driveway. That's way too large of a space to empty out at once. It's important to focus on, and declutter, one small area at a time.
