The Best Gift I Ever Got

Think back to your birthday two years ago. Chances are, if I were to ask you what gifts you were given, you would be hard pressed to remember exactly what you received. It is not because you weren't grateful for the gifts you were given. You were more than likely thrilled at the time. But as time passes, we tend to forget about the gifts that were purchased in a store.

My last birthday, this past July, I ended up receiving the best gift I could ever have imagined. It did not come wrapped in ribbons and bows. It was not handed to me in a tissue-filled gift bag. It was not a gift card to my favorite store. Instead, it was the gift of time.

As many of you with teenage children already know, finding time to spend with teenagers can be near impossible. Between their friends, school activities, sports, and jobs there seems to be little time remaining to spend any time with them. This is why this year's birthday gift from my daughter meant so much to me.

My 14-year old daughter has a job at the local swimming pool. Prior to the day of my birthday actually arriving, she came up to me and said that she wanted to spend some time with me on my birthday. This was music to my ears. She then arranged to take the day off of work (she found a sub) to have some quality time with me for my birthday. We then spent the entire day together window shopping (we didn't buy a thing) and hitting the local Starbucks for coffee treats. We talked, laughed, and connected and had the best day imaginable. This day of mother/daughter time, without a doubt, trumped any wrapped gift I could have received from her, and yet cost nothing.

This whole thing really got me thinking. Making memories with someone is so much more valuable than anything you can ever wrap up in a box. That day with my daughter is making me rethink my upcoming holiday shopping list. There is nothing wrong with showing somebody you care by buying them a gift you think they might like. But this year I am going to try to focus on giving the gift of time to the people I care most about.

A day trip to somewhere fun truly will have more meaning than a sweater that will end up in a donation box in the next year or two. A day set aside for creating memories with family will stay with them much longer than a cell phone upgrade ever could.

Focus on giving more of yourself and less of giving from the wallet. The gift of someone's time truly is a precious gift and not something that they, or you, will ever forget having given or received.
