Decluttering is Not an All or Nothing Job
'My house is a mess.'
'I've got too much stuff.'
'I want to declutter all these things!'
'I can't find what I need in the drawer/pantry/closet/store room...'
Most of us have said such things about our homes or a particular space at one
time or another.
You may even decide to start decluttering at this point. You walk into the
garage. You toss or recycle those piled-up cardboard boxes you were keeping
'just in case.' You get rid of that dusty can of old bug spray that had to have
been on that shelf for 10 years. But then, you realize that the job ahead is
much bigger than it seemed, and you stop, knowing you'll never have the time to
complete it.
Some folks can get rid of everything in one, huge marathon session, but this
only works for a very small percentage of the population. For most people, it's
difficult, if not impossible, to get rid of all the clutter that has built up
over the years in one fell swoop.
The good news is, decluttering is not an all or nothing project for most people.
And that's perfectly OK. The clutter didn't arrive in one day, and you certainly
don't have to get rid of it in one day.
You may begin organizing the kitchen. Some things will be easy to get rid of,
like expired canned foods, the whole wheat pasta no one likes, or the extra set
of measuring cups. Then, you may hesitate over other items...the extra sets of
coasters, the surplus of containers for leftovers, or even the extra can opener.
'What if one can opener breaks?' you may think, and so you put it back in the
drawer.
The fact of the matter is, we are not always ready to get rid of ALL the clutter
at the same time. Sometimes we are still sentimentally attached to something
that, in a year, we will feel OK parting with. Sometimes we just can't decide
whether to get rid of something, so we keep it.
Don't beat yourself up over this. Decluttering isn't a one-time project, but
rather a continuous process. You don't always toss out the things that perhaps
you should the first time around. That's not really important. What IS important,
however, is that you BEGIN the process, and continue the process.
As long as decluttering is done periodically (once a week or once a month), or
there is some method (`one thing in, two things out', for example), you'll be
able to keep clutter at bay and the mess will be under control.
