How Often Do You Use Swear Words?

In a recent web poll I conducted on my web site with Get Organized Now! readers, I asked, 'How often do you use swear words?' Here are the results:

22% Once or twice a week
19% Once or twice daily
18% Multiple times a day
13% Almost never
11% Absolutely never
9% Once or twice a month
7% Very rarely...a few times a year
1% In almost every sentence

Thinking about swear words reminds me of the movie, 'A Christmas Story?' Have you seen it? If you haven't, drop everything and watch it right now. It's hilarious. For anyone who has seen it, you surely remember this interchange as Ralphie was helping his dad change the car tire on a snowy day...

Ralphie: Ohhhh fuuudge!

Ralphie as Adult: [narrating] Only I didn't say 'Fudge.' I said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the 'F-dash-dash-dash' word!

Mr. Parker: [stunned] 'What' did you say?

Ralphie: Uh, um...

Mr. Parker: THAT'S... what I thought you said. Get in the car. Go on!

Ralphie as Adult: [narrating] It was all over - I was dead. What would it be? The guillotine? Hanging? The chair? The rack? The Chinese water torture? Hmmph. Mere child's play compared to what surely awaited me.

Honestly, I've seen this movie a gazillion times...and this exchange still cracks me up.

According to a study published by researchers from Maastricht University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Stanford, and the University of Cambridge, 'Profanity is often used to express one’s unfiltered feelings.' They even went on to say, 'the more you swear, the more honest you likely are.'

Whether that's true or not, swear words are often attached to anger, frustration, pain, sincerity, surprise...even happiness sometimes. Using them seems to increase the feeling being expressed exponentially.

While I try not to swear all that much...like many of you, I have some choice words I express on occasion depending on the circumstances.

If you feel you swear a little too much, and you're trying to kick the habit, here are three ways to do so:

1) Get help from a buddy or two. Assign a few people who are around you often to tap you on the shoulder, or somehow remind you, that you just used strong language. Tally up your daily swears on a phone app or a sheet of paper so you can work on decreasing as needed.

2) Start a swear jar. Every time someone cusses, you (or family members, co-workers, etc.) add a dollar. Or, assign higher dollar amounts according to the 'strength' of the language. Maybe you can donate that filled jar to a favorite charity?

3) Use swear substitutions. These can end up being pretty funny, especially if you typically use some of the more colorful swear words, and you start subbing those words with 'Sugar,' 'Frankenstein,' 'Biscuit,' or 'Ay, caramba!'

  In Closing

'The first flash of color always excites me as much as the first frail, courageous bloom of spring. This is, in a sense, my season--sometimes warm and, when the wind blows an alert, sometimes cold. But there is a clarity about September. On clear days, the sun seems brighter, the sky more blue, the white clouds take on marvelous shapes; the moon is a wonderful apparition, rising gold, cooling to silver; and the stars are so big...and there's a promise that what September starts, October will carry on, catching the torch flung into her hand.'
(Faith Baldwin, Evening Star)
