Become a Minimalist, With More Than Your Stuff
What do you picture when you hear about someone being a minimalist? I asked
three people and they all had similar answers that summed up to this, 'someone
who doesn't own much of anything.'
I'd like to broaden that definition a bit, because to me a minimalist is someone
who can live a happy, fulfilling life, and enjoy more freedom, because they
don't have, or desire, a whole lot of 'stuff' and 'time wasters' in their life.
Minimalists do not have clutter in their homes. Minimalists do not have clutter
in their offices.
And minimalists do not have clutter in their lives.
Let's put 'physical stuff' aside and talk about other areas in your life in
which minimalism can be a plus.
1) Social media. With social media being so prevalent, it's easy to get
caught up in it all. For instance, it's great to have a lot of friends, but
having a huge number of them on social media accounts can add to the 'clutter'
that you have to filter through each day...especially when those 'friends' are
people you hardly know. On top of that, there are so many different social media
sites available. Being on all of them may sound fun, but can deeply cut into
productivity in other areas of life.
* By all means, 'friend' those you're close to, but become more selective of the
volumes of friends...who are really strangers...that you add to your list.
* Limit yourself to one social media site and/or a limited amount of time
enjoying social media in your day.
2) Entertainment. My husband and I visited our friends' house for dinner
one evening. After we finished our meal, we all decided it might be fun to watch
a movie. We sat down in the living room, our friend picked up the remote, and
began navigating through Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and HBO. My immediate thought?
Thousands of movie options and four people deciding on them could potentially
take an hour or more before we begin watching. We suggested they choose three of
their favorite movies from their DVD collection, and we'd select from one of
those.
* Limit your choices...in general. This goes for movie viewing options, to the
number of outfits in your closet, to trying to decide between insurance
companies. The more choices you have, the harder and more time-consuming it's
going to be to decide...and the higher the chances of procrastination in doing
so.
3) Email. Retrieve your email. Count how few of the email messages you
receive are actually relevant to you. Most folks are constantly being flooded
with junk that makes it extremely tedious and overwhelming to get to the ones
they want or need to see.
* Use email filters to immediately identify spam and junk mail. This way, it
automatically gets filtered into your spam and trash folders.
* Unsubscribe from the email lists of retail stores you never buy from. If
you're leaning towards being a minimalist, you won't be buying from most of
them anyway.
* Be mindful about giving your email address out to anyone and everyone. The
fewer people/establishments that have your email address, the fewer junk email
messages that will be pouring in.
* If the problem is just too big to manage, consider starting over fresh with a
brand new email address. Then, only give the address to the people and
establishments that really need to have it.
Leaning towards minimalism in all areas of your life doesn't mean you have
nothing. It means you refrain from inviting anything into your life that makes
it cluttered, chaotic, frustrating, or stressful...and you only allow in that
which makes you comfortable and joyful.
