  Web Poll Results

Do You Like Your First Name?

We recently asked GON Readers, in an online web poll, 'Do you like your first name?' Here are the results:

59% Yes, I love it!
34% It's OK. Sometimes I wish I had a different name.
7% No, I don't like my name at all!

Dale Carnegie, in his 1936 self-improvement classic, How to Win Friends and Influence People, said, 'Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.'

Looking at the poll results, I guess that's true in many, but not all, cases. Still, I'm pretty sure Mr. Carnegie's point was to focus on others more than ourselves.

This all makes me think about the importance of remembering other peoples' names after you meet them. Are you really good at remembering names or do you forget, sometimes seconds after they tell you? Here are a few tips for improved recall:

1) Be mindful and repeat. When you meet someone, focus everything on the person in front of you...rather than thinking about what you'll say next or what that person is wearing, etc. When they tell you their name, say it back to them, 'Nice to meet you, Allison.' Try to get their name in once or twice more during your conversation. 'I had a friend named, Allison, so it should be easy for me to remember your name next time.' 'Allison...you have such a lovely name.' Also, conclude the conversation by saying the person's name again. ' Allison, it was so nice meeting you!' Then, repeat the name to another person following the interaction as well.

2) Immediately ask the person a question. Rather than you telling the person about yourself or something that happened that day, etc., once the person tells you his or her name, ask a question. Doing so allows the other person to talk, and gives you time to focus and set that person's name in your mind. As they're giving you their response, listen...and also say their name silently in your mind a few times.

3) Make an association. If the person's name is also the name of a friend or relative of yours, you may be able to picture that person hanging out with your friend or relative in your mind. Better yet, make the association a very vivid (and even bizarre) one. For instance, if you meet someone named Mandy, you might associate her with candy. So, then picture this person holding a huge candy cane in her hand and tell yourself she smells like peppermint. Next time you see her, chances are you'll remember the candy, and perhaps the scent as well...and recall her name, Mandy.

On a final note, if you meet a lot of new people often, use a note taking app in your cell phone. After you meet someone, record that person's name and maybe a few things about him/her. For instance, 'Michael, Regional Manager of ABC Company, brown hair, tall, knows Jamie, likes photography...' Writing or recording some basic information will aid in helping you remember Michael's name and some things about him as well.
