I Don't Feel Like Doing It

Whether it's scrubbing the shower, weeding the garden, or something big like painting a room, we all have those certain jobs around the house that we know need to get done but we plain and simple just don't feel like doing. Maybe it's a time consuming job. Or maybe it's just one of those things that you just hate doing...so it always ends up getting put on the back burner. Whatever the case may be, there are ways to transform your mindset and actually complete the jobs you've been putting off.

1) Just get started. It has been said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The same concept can be applied to those jobs around the house that we would rather not do. Often it is true that the thought of doing something is actually worse than physically doing it. This is the world where procrastinators live. Don't fall into that trap. If a job needs to be done, then just get started. Once you get started, the energy kicks in. Seeing your progress gets you motivated to continue doing more. Ride that wave until you complete what needs to be done.

2) Call in reinforcements. Misery loves company. If there is something that needs to get done, find somebody to come in and help you. Things are always more fun when you've got company. Find a friend who is in a similar situation as you and take turns helping each other out. Spend one day at your house and a different day at her house until both of your jobs get completed. Not only will the work get done faster, but it will definitely be a lot more fun than going at it alone.

3) Blast some high-energy music. As a true music lover, I never underestimate the power of music. Certain songs can always make me cry, or will take be back to a particular time of my life. When I want or NEED to get motivated I always put on some high energy music. This same concept is used when we play soft music to get a baby to sleep. You may be surprised at how effective music can be in affecting both your mood and motivation. Find the songs that energize you and use them to get you motivated to do that which needs to be done.

4. Reward Yourself for a Job Well Done. Admit it. We all like to have that carrot dangling in front of us from time to time. This is why doctors have a prize box for kids and businesses are constantly offering us rewards cards for shopping with them. Although we may not like to admit it, sometimes we just need that little extra incentive to get us to do the things we really don't feel like doing. In my case I like to reward myself when I get those unpleasant jobs done. I am not talking about getting a new car or anything extravagant. Rather, I like to allow myself something small after I get my tedious jobs done. It could be a special coffee drink, gifting myself a new Kindle book, or anything else that I look forward to having after the work is done. Somehow these things always seem that much better to me...when they come with a feeling of accomplishment.
