I Love Your Newsletters! Do You Have a Suggestion for Keeping Up with Them?
A GON Reader Asks:
Maria,
Happy October! I just love your GON newsletters. They help me stay on track
and are constant reminders for getting and staying organized. I've been on
your newsletter list for years and have shared your web site, newsletter,
and social media channels with literally everyone I know.
My question for you actually has to do with organizing the newsletters you send.
I know you suggest I read them once a day, which I normally do. But, what about
when I miss an issue? For instance, last week I was feeling under-the-weather so
I never even turned on my computer or picked up my phone. Today, now that I'm
feeling better, I noticed there were four of your issues in my inbox, along with
a slew of other email...which was a bit overwhelming. Your thoughts?
This fabulous GON reader 'Ask Maria' question was submitted by:
Hannah G., Saddle River, NJ
(Married, busy mom of three children, business owner, and frequent-volunteer)
Maria Gracia responds:
Hi Hannah,
Thanks a million for being a loyal reader. I'm so glad you're enjoying my
newsletters and it's great to hear that you normally keep up with them on a
daily basis. I'm so happy doing so is helping you.
That being said, we all feel under-the-weather now and then (I'm sorry to hear
this was the case with you last week!)...and those are the days when rest and
relaxation are top priority. In addition, sometimes there are other reasons that
we can't read daily (i.e. vacation, a week with a crazy schedule, computer
problems, etc.)
Here are a few recommendations for keeping up with my daily newsletter:
1) Read and take notes daily. Every day, take the 5 minutes or less to
read the issue and to jot down any notes in a notebook that you wish to
remember. I've purposely designed them so they take 5 minutes or less to read.
In fact, I run the same 'product recommendation' and 'web updates' within them,
every single day for 7 days. So, once you've read that section, the daily
newsletters that follow will take even less time to read. Just like mail piles
up if you don't sort through it every day, so will your 'To Read' email
messages. Plus, reading every single day keeps organizing 'top of mind.' So,
even if you're busy (and we all are) taking a few minutes to sit back, regroup,
and learn a new organizing trick or concept is essential to helping you get and
stay organized.
2) Make a folder and drag 'em in. Create a 'folder' in your email program
titled, 'GON in 5 Minutes Newsletters'. If, for any reason, you can't read my
newsletter the day you get it, the next time you retrieve your email, drag it
into this folder. In doing so, all the GON newsletters will be ready for you
when you're ready for them.
3) If you read weekly, versus daily... For anyone who prefers to save ALL
of their reading for the weekend, by using suggestion number two above, you're
essentially creating your very own 'weekly digest' of sorts. So, whenever your
weekly reading day and time rolls around (like Sundays at 10A, for instance),
all the newsletters will be ready for you.
4. Skim the subject lines. Just as a side note, I always try to be
descriptive in my subject lines, so in case you're way behind, you should be
able to easily skim the subject lines for those GON newsletters that interest
you the most. This way you can read those, delete the rest, and get all caught
up again quickly.
Hope this helps,
Maria
